maybe I should have compared Freddy to Bryan Ferry, becouse both knew they had/have capasity and had a mindsett and thought behind their singing, it was not just soulfull, it was also technical and experimental

Mercury was probably the greatest male vocal performing in a non opera format that will have ever graced our ears.
Well, there it is. (Amadeus)

I don't get the comparison; the quote fits Freddie, but David Byron? A decent singer, though a bit dodgy on notation, especially on the low range, a middle-order vocalist I would have thought, unless you are a Heap fan. Heap were a fun band, and could rock a bit. David could sing a bit too, but top-class? Never. But Freddie (though wildly over the top in taste, something only he could get away with) was indeed classy at his best. George Michael would be a better match for Freddie, if only vocally and nothing else.

Hi,

I think that Freddie had more to sing about and he was very honest and direct and the music he and his band were doing was not some imaginary rock music that ... was not as important as otherwise. Uriah Heep was not as important a band as Queen became, because one was with it and the other was just loud ... that is not to say that UH was not good, but ... nothalf as good as Queen was and became.

Queen was worth watching in concert. I have to tell you that UH was not!

Freddie is/was, by far, one of the very best rock singers ever ... progressive or not be damned! And by God ... he meant it to the last vibe of his soul! The rest, are just singers ... singing a Christmas song for the family!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

in terms of rock singers in my book freddy is number 1. Not my favorite at all, but he was amazing nonetheless.

Don't know the other one but anyway nobody can beat Freddie! Hug

Both are legends, and both notoriously excessive in their lifestyles.  However, Freddy annoys me a LOT more than David, so in honour of The Magician's Birthday, I'm going with David.  I can't think of a full Queen album that I like.

A difficult choice.  It's not unreasonable to suggest that these are the best singers in prog rock. Both groups were, of course, mostly associated with genres other than prog but let's not be pedantic.

Heep's music is far more appealing to me than Queen's so this decided my vote.  In other words I enjoy listening to Byron more because I prefer the songs.  Without being critical of Jon Anderson I've often wondered what Yes's classics would sound like with Byron singing.

Very easy for me, Freddy Mercury

FM for the poll by a huge margin, but nobody in any Rock sub-genres comes close to the operatic vocals of Francesco Di Giacomo.
