I would go for The Moody Blues and Procol Harum.  Then I started wondering about Graham Bond, but I don't know him all that well.

How come The Moody Blues, The Nice and Procol harum are not on this list.....

they're my top three choices
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Where are The Beach Boys? None of these bands like The Doors or The Beatles made a real Proto-Prog album like Pet Sounds. This album changed the way of making pop music. Without it, there wouldn't be no Prog Rock in the future at all. It was the major influence on Revolver and Sgt. Peppers, and The Beach Boys are a great influence on John Wetton!
An interview with the bassist, where he'll mention The Beach Boys:

This is a very Tight List , you need at least 100 more , but as it is , Crimsons & Floyds ! but progressive music came by the effort of so many bands , some are listed here ( but very few ) some are not ! anyway , they all contributed , one way or another by the making of this very wide world living inside our souls , since 1968 !

Don't tell Fripp he's a founder of progressive rock, and I'd bet he'd say the Beatles were the ones who started it all with St. Pepper's. To see Crimso (my favorite band) leading this poll is a little telling on just how many people have short memories.

Oh and, shame to anyone who voted for Pink Floyd. I love them too, especially the Barrett era, but it took them a while before they went truly progressive and there were MANY others before them.

King Crimson, without a doubt. That's not to say that KC are neccssarily better than the other bands listed here, but they certainly were the first true progressive rock band.

Genesis, Yes and King Crimson should not be seen as founders or Prog Rock. In the Court of the Crimson King is just the first sign of maturity of both Symphonic and Eclectic Prog.
Those guys are the true founders. Their second album is the birth of prog.

Agreed, would 'The Nice' be out of the question?
