Topic: Van Halen or Van Hagar Posted: June 05 2005 at 19:24 |
The Roth era was a lot better- the songs were just...cooler. Van Hagar really only had a handful of really good songs.

Undoubtedly the David Lee Roth era was best- that debut album of Van Halen is easily one of the Top 10 rock albums ever made- as when Roth left, the wit and sparkle that put them above other rock bands of the era went with it. Whilst I think Sammy Hagar is great in his own right, the Hagar-era material bears no resemblance to previous Halen stuff- and is more AOR in style.

Buckethead certainly is a unqiue guitarist. But he's still bizzare and enigmatic.

Cool, I'm glad you guys like DLR era more. I'm on a Roth fansite, so naturally, I'm a DLR fan, definitely not Hagar.
The DLR albums were more fun to listen to. Hagar's songs are just cheesy

Yeah, that's really my overall criticism of Eddie's solos: they're great rock guitar, no doubt, but I don't pick up an interesting personality behind the soloing. He's not an artist, but an incredible pracitioner.

I know what you mean. It's all the same, I learned the incredibly difficult tapping parts of Eruption easily, and now all of his solos are just so easy.
Alex Van Halen is a good drummer, but he is somewhat overrated and can get repetetive; and Michael Anthony, words cannot describe the filth that he plays.

Roth era Van Halen is Van Halen. Sammy Hagar ruined Van Halen. Eddie's great of course throughout, but I tuned out when Roth left.

Does anyone here prefer DLR era Van Halen or Samm Hagar era Van Halen?
I know they're not very proggy but it's a non-prog forum, so whatever.
