I host a prog podcast and have a Steve Hackett feature every week, though the main theme is live recordings. The link is below. There are many other podcasts available from the Dividing Line as well.

Thanks Dick
I appreciate the royalty issues and sympathise with the artists, I really do. I am a professional photographer by hobby, and I know what it's like to get ripped off. BUT... Here in South Africa we cannot legally buy downloads of music, movies, television episodes or even many iPhone apps off the internet. Copyright, royalty and license restrictions prohibit their sales via the net to our country, and God alone knows why. It's so bad that I cannot even buy a Top Gear t-shirt from the BBC online store. It's true! South Africa is the one and only country to whom they will not ship. It's ridiculous! Another limitation we have is our internet access. Unlike Europe, the UK and the US, we pay through the nose for broadband. That's because we have a telecoms monopoly that milks us for every cent. Listening to streaming media like morow.com or aural moon is thus a luxury I save for the end of the month after nursing my cap all the way through, and especially for this purpose. But don't take my word on both or either of these issues. Research it and see for yourself. For someone like myself with a growing passion for prog and a desire to learn more on who's who in the zoo, where it all started, and to get to know the roleplayers, I'm hamstrung and out of the race looong before the starter's shot goes off. Therefore you only have my guarantee that having learned about the bands, and establishing who I like by downloading podcasts, I then act on it and import the CD's via eBay, and from far-off places like Turkey, where they are willing to ship to my country. So, to any artists that may feel offended at my downloading podcasts, please feel free to speak to your record labels so that it becomes possible for us down here to legally buy music. We'd love to support you if you'd only let us!

Sid Smith's. for instance:
I'm afraid our station doesn't do downloadable podcasts of programmes such as mine because of the copyright and royalties issues - I trust the others who do such podcasts are meeting relevant legal requirements.

Thanks Captain!
So far I know that I enjoy the Canterbury sound, I admire the European and Eastern Bloc prog bands, have fallen in love with the Mellotron, and am loving the awkward time signatures. I am not nuts about Steve Hackett even though I know he's one of the God-fathers, and the early Genesis stuff doesn't do it for me either. I once possessed "In the court of the Crimson King" on vinyl, but in my youthful ignorance sold it together with everything else when work situations turned against me. I should have starved but hold on to that album. In those days I didn't even know I was listening to prog!! For your record, you can also try Progzilla, by Cliff Pearson. He seems well versed in the history and diversity of prog, but take that from a newbie!! |

all I know of is The Rogue's Gallery, but I don't like it that much. Too mainstream for my tastes
It focuses mostly on new prog |

Hi all!
Do you know of prog podcasts that may be available for download? I am a relative newbie to the world of prog, and am keen to learn more about the bands, their musicians, and the comings and goings of the prog world. Here in South Africa we are extremely limited by the music companies who import commercial crap and mostly ignore the lovers of fine art, for economic reasons, and because of racial bias. What's more, prog lovers are extremely scarce in the music stores, so to ask for professional assistance to learn more about prog won't get you anywhere. I have so far discovered the progzilla podcast, and occasionally listen to aural moon or morow.com, but the latter 2 don't really feature much by way of talking about the industry. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
