Read the lyrics for the song 'Second Nature.' They make what would have otherwise been pretty boring song into a really emotional track.

Like everyone else has said, you've grabbed the wrong albums. In your case I would suggest you might buy a live album. That's how I got into Rush. Or if you don't want a live album...at least buy the right Rush albums! The ones you have I would not suggest to anyone wanting to get into Rush!

Most prog is goofy....especially early prog stuff. Big smile

Early prog stuff? Thanks for narrowing it down.

Let's try some advice here:
Fly by Night
Get rid of your zappa-esque sense of humour and learn to laugh with Geddy's shrieking yeahs!
That's goofy humour for you!

2112
Rip to mp3 and just play the first 4 minutes and the last 2 of 2112 on constant repeat.
If that doesn't get your air-guitar up then you're hopeless

A Farewell to Kings
Stick to Xanadu and don't bother with the rest of the album

Signals
Brilliant album. My favourite Rush, but that's not the prevailing opinion IMO.

Presto
Roll the Bones
Test for Echo

Try to sell them for a few beers.

Aside from the Police-tinged "Signals," none of them has struck me as even remotely remarkable. The less we say about the despicable philosophical basis for the lyrics, the better.

So here's what I've bought over the years:

Fly by Night
2112
A Farewell to Kings
Signals
Presto
Roll the Bones
Test for Echo

Now, will somebody propose a way to approach these in a manner that will keep me from yawning and switching to Zappa or Crimson?

You can sell the ones you don't like on Ebay, buy another stuff. Just keep with the ones you liked, simple resolution.

I'd sooner buy every single Rush item than sully my collection with modern smut.

You bought the wrong albums. A Farewell to Kings and Signals are great, but as others have said, you really do need Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves.

better taste in music?

Just kidding. But if you have listened to all those albums and still don't like them at all, then the only suggestion would be to move on.

Nothing.

If you don't like it, move on.

Maybe explore something written in the past 20 years

I don't really like them either.  But Hemispheres was always there best to me.  Definitely their most progressive.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance.

I'm still trying to make Fripp amazing for someone.
As for the stuff you already have, there are options.  Do another listen, sell it, toss it in the trash, or attempt to play Frisbee with the discs. Wink

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

A completely different taste in music??

You dont like them, so what? Moving Pictures is my favourite and I guess if you like Signals, you think MP is ok, but to be honest it;s hardly worth investing more money in band, who I really think you probably have the gist of by now. You've got albums from all their eras in your collection. You know what the Rush philosophy to making music is by now.

They're not for everyone....same can be said for King Crimson and Zappa.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
