because unlike most prog bands, Pink Floyd discovered that there can be much beauty in a simple album cover...i dont think DSOTM would have sold so many copys if it werent for that brillant album cover.

There is one album by the British Amon Düül that exists with two
versions of the cover (at least the vinyl edition); the 2nd is the one
we have, showing the band rehearsing through a fish-eye lense. But the
first cover of the album (which I unfortunately can't find in the web)
was a wonderfully surrealistic picture. I only saw it once on a
2nd-hand vinyl fair; it must be a real rarity. The CD version
unfortunately uses the 2nd versiion of the cover.
The original version of the first album of the British Amon Düül, "Hawk
Meets Penguin", exists in 2 versions of the cover too. The first
version (which we have) shows a strange nightly scene on a cemetery. A
penguin is standing on a grave, and beneath it is a mine with a burning
fuse. At the other end of the grave there is another mine with a
burning fuse, and a hawk is about to land on it. The album cover is in
black and white and wonderfully surrealistic. The 2nd version of the
cover, and the only one available now, shows a photo of the band.
I have no idea why these higly original covers where replaced by the boring ones that now are used.
Somehow the pic of "Hawk meets Penguin" does not appear here; if you
want to see it go to this link:

misplaced childhood has a nice use of colour on the album cover. Train of Thought is more colourful than a rainbow lol but that can be ACTUALLY said for dark side of the moon, i dont know if it is beautiful, but it is a lovely album cover, tho the darkness with beams of light and hollow prism give me a feel of claustrophobia and madness (themes on the album), also represents floyds light shows of the time (something very important that hasnt been put onto dvd yet)

Although I can't say the music inside matches the cover.
BTW, I miss gatefold sleeves.

Just a few that came to my mind:
The mighty Zeit..
Obviously this is one of the greatest..
The gloomy covers of Opeth are naturally among my favourites..
This is really cool..
Sorry I can't decide which one is the most beautiful
