I suggest you to listen to Guillame de Machaut, and search for scores. At the wikipedia footer page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillaume_de_Machaut) there are free scores links. Then you'll find further elements while doodling with other early sacred music.

Hello everyone,
Are there any books that can teach me how to write vocal counterpoint melodies like Gentle Giant?
I am huge fan of these guys would like to learn how to write A cappella parts like them. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Adytum
