If I had only one advice : Sennheiser PX100.
![]() It is cheap and is of EXCELLENT quality. I mean, no need for a price/quality rate, it's just awesome AND moreover cheap. This model is even very good for listening to music quietly at home. May I precise that while not being an audiophile I'm very exigent regarding sound quality.

Running is a definite problem with the larger iPods, since they have hard drives that can be damaged by any movement, although I assume they're more shock protected than a computer hard drive. If you get one of the smaller ones that has flash memory then that's not a problem, but the largest iPod Nano is 16GB.
What? You're using ripoff software for computer idiots. I thought you could even use Windows Explorer to copy them, but I may be wrong about that. The only problem with Sharepod is that it seems to have difficulty retaining some of the ID3 tags. Edited by Henry Plainview - December 10 2009 at 10:03 |

I had to reverse populate iTunes after a crash and there was a program that will do it all of it. $20. DRMs stink, having a dedicated instance of iTunes for each iPod stinks (I'm on my 2nd and we now have 3 more in the household, all which I have to manage...these kids.
![]() Ugggh.
The only issue I ever had with my 1st iPod (2nd gen nano, I think) was that I used it some much that the battery crapped out, and would only hold about an hour of charge by the end. It still worked fine in the dock, but couldn't use it on trips. I have a 120GB classic and have had no problems with it. Still haven't ripped all my CDs yet, 30 GB used up so far.

You can get free software nowadays (although it isn't Apple software) which lets you rip music off your iPod. Although you can only do 10 tracks as a time unless you want to pay for the premium edition. I like iTunes, but as Henry said, I don't use the store. |

I'm very happy with my good old 512M mp3 player. Bought it for 19euros, great sound, minimal.
I store a few albums that I listen to intensively, then switch. I hate having too much choice... I usually put in album for every mood. I don't even know the brand. I use HD205 with that, and bus rides become a pleasure ![]() |

I don't have a problem with iTunes. It's annoying as hell when to switch computers with, but other than that, I can easily rip 320kb/s AAC files and sync them without too much effort. I would probably think differently if I had anything with DRM, but there's a reason I don't buy anything from the iTunes store.

They're not just bulky versions of iPods. Plus, you don't have to deal with iTunes suspiciously copying the format and style of the Zune media player on PC. Or with iTunes at all. |

I've got a 4GB iPod nano, 3rd Generation which has never had a problem over 2 years of daily use. The earphones which came with it were sh*tty though...
I'm either getting one of the 120GB iPod classics or a 32GB iPod touch, but I don't want the touch since I probably won't use it for anything other than music which defeats the purpose, and if you use a classic whilst running, it doesn't last long because of the moving parts ![]() @The Pessimist Have you ever used it whilst running? I've read that it nearly halfs the lifespan, which is my main worry about buying one. |

I'm gonna second the iPod here. I've had mine 2 years and it hasn't let me down once, runs like clockwork. I've got an iPod Classic, so I suppose that's what I'll be recommending. There was a lot of bad rep about them, but if I'm honest I've had to beef with it so far.

I had a Zen Video M (Creative)... amazing sound quality (one of the best....better than any IPod....) the thing is that the screen stopped working (after a year and a half)... so I am thinking of buying a Creative Zen X-Fi (Creative's sound quality is great + they last long-I've had a Zen Micro for almost 3 years now)

^ 160GB is a lot, but it still couldn't hold my entire collection. Currently I'm quite happy with 8GB, that's about 60 albums (I use high bitrate mp3s only). Every week I simply remove albums that I listened to and replace them with new albums that I bought, or old albums that I'd like to listen to again.
BTW: I was at a store today and had a look at the iPod touch ... not bad, but very expensive. I wouldn't want to spend more than 200 EUR for it, and even that's a bit steep considering that my old player works fine. So I guess I'll simply wait a little while longer ... |

I have the Creative Zen X-Fi also.. I've had quite a few Creative mp3 players, I decided to buy Creative because the Hard Drive space was always larger when these first came out. Now though, that the iPod has a 160G mp3 player, I might consider this.. 30G is nothing for the variety of music that I like.. |

I currently have an 8GB Creative Zen X-Fi and I'm quite happy with it. I'm thinking about getting an iPhone though, or an iPod touch ... I want to try out the cool music instrument applications:

You don't want to get a Zune. They are just bulky versions of iPods IMO. I have a 30 GB iPod that I've had for 3 or 4 years, and it's great. My friend has a 120 GB iPod and he says it's great, and from what I've seen it is.

I don't like earbuds anyway, I prefer nice comfortable headphones. I have read that Microsoft is going to stop selling Zunes and will only carry Zune HD, so I am going to try to get my hands on one soon. At Walmart I think I saw the 120 GB marked at 229.99, which is fairly reasonable.

My current player is a Zune and I'm happy with it. There's a Zune HD coming out. I'm sticking with the one I got until it croaks and I'm guessing I can pretty much count on that happening. It's an 80 gig and a little over half full. I'm thinking that you don't want a really small player these days unless you want to swear off video.. It's slightly smaller than a deck of cards.
Speaking of headphone for a portable digital music device, the ones that came with the devices are all crap. The Zune "premium" headphones were crap and uncomfortable to boot. I've got a set of Sony earbuds that actually have reasonable bass and are comfortable. This is important, because if you have to crank it up for good bass you will likely damage your hearing. Sorry I don't have the model number handy. Edited by Slartibartfast - September 17 2009 at 15:25 |

I'd recommend getting a Zune, I've got the now discontinued 80gb model (bought it right before they replaced them with the 120gb for the same price
