Topic: Gong unveil new promo video "How To Stay Alive" Posted: August 25 2009 at 19:12 |
GonG kicks it "old-school". That's great. It brought a big smile to my face. :)
It sounds dated, yes, both the rap and the traditional GonG sound, but that's not a bad thing to my ear. Great fun and very good.

Ironic that you speak of it not being your cup of tea while discussing this band who seems to like tea so much.

Hi,
This is so fine ... and I'm just so glad to see Steve and Daevid together again ... they really made a special combination that Gong never had again without them both ... and if Daevid is the ultimate beat poet (we're talking the 60's literature scene, by the way) in a rock band, then Steve is the perfect person to help place this on a more modern idiom of music ... not to say that Gong never got there since 1975 or so, but unffortunately it became way too dependant on the lyrics and unffortunately, Daevid is probably way too scattered doing too many other things to help guide this latest generation of Gong into another dimention ... and Steve would seem a good addition and might add some freshness to help focus Daevid a bit better ...
This is so far out ... but where is Gilly? .... not well? |
no worries, she is on the album oo

I think it's good, although the vocal style isn't my cup of tea. Might just take a while to soak in. I thought it was a nice kind of gimmick when they used it on "Gates of Heaven", but now it just seems a little worn out.
The instrumental sections, on the other hand, I think are amazing.

It's not fangirlism; I really like that track. I am not a fangirl at all, of no artist. Steve Hackett and Peter Hammill are two of my most favourite artists, yet I'll be the first to acknowledge that "Cured" by Steve Hackett is a bad album and "In a Foreign Town" is below par for Hammill (though the latter is is still better than the horrible "Cured"). But this track is fresh and alive, and I really love it.

I have no idea why you made this remark. This is great fun stuff. Gong (and their many related bands) picked up snippets from all kinds of music, punk, reggae, ethnic music, whatever, and integrated it into the Gong universe. And they always sound fresh and alive, at least to my ears.
|
Oh, I'm sorry I offended the GonG fanpeople who claim that fanpeople are idiots. I take back my remark. The song is amazing and nothing bad can be said about it because GonG can do no wrong for they are GonG and if ANYBODY else tried it this site would have their ass faster than a long-haired guy in prison.
Now I bet you'll have no idea why I made THAT remark. Bring it.

Touch your own nose; it is you who named himself after a track by his favourite band, not I . Gong have, like any other band, made stronger and weaker albums, and I am not too fond of some of Daevid Allen's solo stuff (though he made some really excellent albums too, like "N'existe pas"). But I really believe this is some fun stuff and like it very much. This is Daevid Allen at his wackiest, and that's always good. And the excerpts I have heard from the rest of the tracks make me look really forward to the album.

I've watched the video a couple times now, and I've checked out the samples on Planet Gong. As Friede said, I'm definitely looking forward to the album.

This is pretty good stuff ! I think I need to spend more time on Planet Gong and less time on golf, wine & women.

One viewer of the video called the music "Gongster Rap". I must say I much prefer it to "Gangster Rap". This video and the snippets of their upcoming album which they published on the "Planet Gong" site make me really look forward to the release of the new album. Gong is still very much alive and kicking.
