I had a pretty good idea of what this was before I looked at it and would've been upset if I had been wrong

Yes, very nihilistic vision, but powerful. Shows violence horribly as it should be IMO, not as entertaiment. As about 10 year old kid I recorded "The Cross of Iron" from TV, which probably affected me quite much, as I watched it often when I was sick and alone in home. As adult it opens differently. Very powerful scene, where Coburn is at the no-man's land with the Russian capture child soldier.
I have not seen all of his movies, but both "Pat Garret and Billy The Kid" and "The Wild Bunch" are masterpieces. I have his filmography from a movie guide marked just few weeks ago along with other dozens classic directors, and I'm seeking the other films on DVD as I get time and money (later is harder). I read that he has some non-violent films too in his catalog.

For me,one of the best filmmakers ever:he was a true maverick, never caring about anything but having a true vision of violence, really far away from Holywood's way of selling it thanks to John Wayne for example.Sam Peckinpah never hesitated to show how any of us could behave very badly(treason, murder, self defense...)if caught in a dangerous situation.By the way,The Wild Bunch is one of my favourites, what are your thoughts?
