Wow, this music is truly incredible. The story behind the creation of the album was very inspiring as well.
This is a rare modern masterpiece: "Laboratories of the Invisible World" is the best song I've heard in a couple of years.

Thanks Greg, for shedding light on what was possibly confused.

Ah, cool post.
I, for one, will buy anything that is available to buy. If Part the Second had a physical release, I would be all over it. And I'm holding off on downloading any of maudlin's other albums, preferring to buy them just as soon as they are fiscally viable. So, Greg, keep us posted on any chances to buy reprints or anything!

At this juncture I felt it was important for me to interject for a second.
However, my purpose is not to take any kind of moral or ethic stance on the debate at hand as it is kind of futile. BUT I did want to make a few facts very clear so as to shed some light on the intentions at hand:
While it is true that the idea of giving away something for free without having the goods to sell otherwise seems a bit weird, it is probably good to remind everyone that maudlin of the Well as a band does not exist anymore. This album was spawned from the idea of cleaning out the closet and as it was completely fan funded we could not in good faith charge for it.
I do realize that it is unfortunate to not have our other albums for sale but it is a situation we hope to remedy soon but I do not want to disclose information to that regard until I know for sure how that will proceed.
The important thing to remember is that regardless of not having other motW merchandise available to purchase, I can assure you that any and all donations monies we received were used for the express purpose of paying for recording costs and travel expenses and left over donations are being divied up to our members who did take substantial time off from work (in some cases a month) to give their time free of charge to the creation of the album.
So while it is not necessary to donate, any we receive does in fact support the band members with our current musical projects(Kayo Dot, Baliset, etc.), even though motW itself is defunct.

I would like to point out, yet again, that maudlin of the Well's first album is NOT out of print yet but available for $17 off of Kayo Dots web page. I wouldnt imagine that there's too many of them left since they'e been available for 2 years and it wasnt a huge run.
I remember Driver stating when he announced the recording of Part the Second that Dark Symphonies (motW record label) were completely uninterested in the band (probably because they are officially defunct), both its new album and re-relasing the old ones, which is why PtS is a fan funded, self released, free to download album and that you still cant get Bath/Leaving Your Body Map brand new.
And no, I havnt donated yet, but I intend to come the summer when I should have a bit more money.

very helpful info. And that's cool that you plan to donate. but I understand the lack of funds issue.....

he might as well just download the other albums if that's how it's going to play out. He's poor, let him acquire music like every other poor person....
No, seriously, I just don't get why he wouldn't pay to support the band. buying an album off of ebay just supports some schmuck who is putting too high of a price on it..... That's all I was curious about. He seems rather against that notion for some reason. Like I said, you wouldn't have this album without patronage of other fans (who understand the hardships of writing/producing/recording an album).
Oh well. I am not gonna convince you guys to have integrity to do such a thing.... enjoy the album either way, they worked hard on it. And it rules! On that we can agree?
| It's a fact of the music business. When I can, I try to buy albums new. But used stores are legal, and so is Ebay, so I use it.
I think it's stupid to put out a free album, but not have anything available for purchase. I would have bought all three of the other albums. Alas, they are not there. I can't help that.

No. And I don't plan on it.
However, maudlin of the Well's discography got pretty high up on my list of albums to acquire.

not that you have to necessarily justify this to me, but what is your reasoning behind NOT donating? (especially if you hope to see their other releases to ever get reissued)
|
I'm poor. I limit myself to a few acquisitions a month.
That said, I have means of (legally) obtaining albums that are not readily available (I just have to patient sometimes).
I think it's a bit silly to release a free album without having the other albums readily available for purchase. It's a pointless promotion. If I had funds, I would readily scoop up the other three.
In fact, I just lost an Ebay bid at the last minute for one of theirs.
|
Oh that's just PRICELESS that you would bid on their other material (at most likely exorbitant prices) but you will not pay the artist for an album that they worked just as hard on! Don't you see the hypocrisy and irony in that? It's not silly to release a free album without the others available. Why? because the other albums release is controlled by their previous record label, whereas the latest free album is an endeavor that was entirely free from any record label distribution or licensing or legal entanglements. We should be glad that a certain amount of people initially donated money to even allow the band to record and write the material. Or were you unaware of that taking place? Yeah. that's how it worked. A bunch of fans- like yours truly- donated money so that we could hear another motw album. Is it too much to ask to donate even $5 or $1 to their cause (if you are willing to shell out crazy money for their other albums, why not this? That makes NO f**kING SENSE AT ALL.) If you like it, why not pay a nominal fee for it? You can't necessarily go into a restaurant and just eat something and then walk out without paying, because you claim it wasn't as good as other restaurants.... or better yet, if they are giving away free samples and you like them (but there is a limit on the other forms of snacks by the same company), why wouldn't you pay for more, if you are willing to pay for the other snacks? I'm sorry dude, but the "I am poor" argument is not gonna work in this case, you proved that with your admittance to bidding on their other material.
|
Are you at least five years old?
Don't be stupid.
If a band makes an album free, I take it- no regrets. I sell mine. I've sold about 20. No regrets.
And no, I cannot afford to pay exorbitant prices. Nor would I. If the other albums are controlled by another record label and I cannot purchase them, guess what?
TOO BAD.
I can't change that. I would buy them at full price if I could. maudlin of the Well must be poor businesspeople. Music is a business.
If this free album didn't come out, then I would never know about them and would have not cared about them. Get real. I NEVER donate money to any artist. If they put it out there for free, it's promotional. This band has my attention. Unfortunately, they don't have the goods.
|
So, how's the business side of your music workin' for ya? I bet nobody donates to you either.... oh and the mudslinging with regards to ageism, is just juvenile in itself.
|
I have given away more albums than I have sold. That doesn't bother me. Maybe you'll win one here.
mudslinging with regard to ageism? I don't know what you mean.

Anyway, for what its worth, I just ordered this.
Collaborator pick for 2006. So at least Mr. Driver will be pocketing something I suppose. And I love violin.

I should add that I was unaware that maudlin of the Well was out of print for the most part (hence the dearth of reviews for the first album).
But as I said, I would love to have their work. It's too bad they (or the record company or whomever) does not make that available.
