When was the last time you saw someone underrate them because they are popular?
I think they are overrated because to me their music mainly sound like a combination of a bunch of other bands before them I don't think were particulary progressive, or great (imo) in the fist place.

They're underrated among elitists, which - last time I checked, was the only people who got a shred of respect on these forums

With all due respect, over/under rating remains a matter of personal preference. Such artist may be more talented than another, such artist may be underrated for one and overrated to someone else.
It seems Dream Theater is well rated by a lot of people.
I saw Dream Theater last summer and liked the show. Quite obviously, their musical background seems more limited than some other bands, but they work well inside their limits.
The sound and the song's construction, although, is rather uniform and I hope they can put more variations in their inspiration. This may lead them to push their actual limits and produce something more original and more performant.
The parenthood of their sound with lots of actual prog bands may eventually place them as a band among others.
So overrated or underrated? As far as I'm concerned, it is a typical 21st century band, that works OK with limited musical background, and limited imagination and limited inspiration.

Yes to infinity. Being able to play your instrument really fast for long periods of time doesn't make you good in my eyes.

It all depends on how you rate them. For me, they are my favorite band of all time and I rate them highly. I have not heard anything else that strikes me the same way as DT's music. Some bands come close, but just don't have the originality and musicianship. Also, I think a lot of fans who don't like their previous couple of albums should wake up and realize how good they are. So, no, they are not overrated, but possibly underrated. Scenes From a Memory is DT's best album by the way.

I can relax to death metal and prog metal its just got to be your gig man, I listen to metal for the musicianship and complexity and it helps me get work done as well, it gives you that extra push. |
I can relax to metal.
I don't find DT at all relaxable to though, I'd much rather chill to some Opeth, Metallica, Black Sabbath or RATM.

They practically took Prog Metal to a whole other level friend. And They Have influenced THOUSANDS OF BANDS! you look at every prog metal band out there look at their myspace and see if it doesn't say Dream Theater as an influence. When you think of Metal The biggest names that pop into your head are Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Dream Theater, and Metallica these guys were gods.
