Ok, so you guys are more interested in voting for your favorite cereal or whether you prefer Coca Cola or Pepsi than discovering new prog albums. Fine, but why then come to any prog website at all?

It's been a while ... if you haven't checked out the ProgRadar feed in a while, have a look at it again:
http://progfreak.com/home/progradar.xhtml Have a listen to some of the bands if you like ... and if you enjoy some of those albums, maybe you could enter some information for exciting new releases that you've listened to. |

I'd suggest a combination of numerals & letters - like 0n0 |

Well, you can count me in, just added tags for the new Giant Squid. Question...how do you add band links, country, etc. for albums already added to the database? (e.g Giant Squid) |

^ good point. Actually there was a time when I didn't offer that distinction ... in the lower ratings you could only choose from 0, 2, 4 or 5. But some users complained, so I put the steps back in. After all, the goal of PF - among other things - is to make the rating system convenient for everyone to use, no matter what preferences they have.

Also a refuge for people who can't deal with the PA five star rating system. He did a nice job with subdividing. Two degrees for "awful", a 0.0 and a 1.0 If I might make a suggestion 1.0 "really awful" 0.0 "really, really awful" Edited by Slartibartfast - March 19 2009 at 13:18 |

You've got 2009 releases already. That's about 700 per month for January, February and March. This is starting out as a big year for prog releases |

You're very welcome ... but keep in mind that this service depends on members submitting tags. That's one of the reasons I'm creating this thread. A few PA experts are already participating, and if we can get a few more on board then this could really work nicely. |

^ good question. First and foremost it's a collaborative music database where normal users can not only submit ratings and reviews, but also help determine genre and prog status of all the artists, albums and tracks. Genres are maintained as tags *only* so instead of having a specific sub genre like for example "Italian Symphonic Prog Rock" we have the tags "Italian", "Symphonic", "Prog" and "Rock". Based on this core feature (the collaborative music database) the site offers a number of other useful services, most notably the signature service, playlist service, rss feeds etc.. And last but not least Progfreak.com contains the PA genre charts, which PA collabs use to process band additions.
BTW: Notice that I created this thread in the "Get the Word Out" section of the forum ... it's specifically for promoting other websites. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - March 19 2009 at 02:51 |

^ I know how you feel. Still, you could help us out by tagging some of the 2009 prog releases.

Heck, I can barely keep up with the stuff i stumble onto. Being fed even more would eliminate the time I'm trying to put on listening to what I got recently (halfway through the 20 used LPs I bought before XMas)

Today I accidentally found a nice new prog album from 2009 ... the band is not (yet) in the archives. A while ago I created a nice RSS feed over at Progfreak.com which I dubbed "ProgRadar":
http://progfreak.com/home/progradar.xhtml If you don't know what RSS is you can look it up at wikipedia. In a nutshell it is like a newsletter, just the other way round: Instead of receiving the information on a daily/weekly/etc schedule, with RSS you get a list of the newest items and - using tools like your web browser or dedicated RSS applications/websites - can browse them yourself for changes. The idea behind ProgRadar is simple: When you come across an interesting new prog release, you submit some tags for the album at Progfreak.com. Submitting progressiveness level and main genre will suffice. If you're the first to submit this info for the album, it will be added to the ProgRadar feed. In turn you can use the feed to discover albums that other users tag as prog. So it's a collaborative thing ... you submit some information, and you receive some information. Unfortunately currently only a handful of people are using this service. I hope that with this thread a few more people might join in. In order to keep this thread alive, I'll occasionally post some of the albums which I found through the service (or which I added to the feed myself) here. I'll start with the album I was talking about earlier: http://progfreak.com/Astra-US-The-Weirding,_dbe,albums,_auto_491930.xhtml The band (Astra) is not the one which is already in the archives (an Italian Prog Metal band). They're from the US and play an interesting mellow retro/psychedelic/stoner style with lots of mellotron and flute. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - May 12 2009 at 15:40 |
