Some people would also argue Greg Allman is irrelevant and his opinion is worth sh*t all. I'm not saying I'm one of them, but you make it sound as if suddenly his opinion is so much more meaningful than others and somehow more correct.

Man, you people can read SO MUCH INTO A FRIGGIN' POST!!!!!! That's not what I meant at all! I'm not necessarily a GA fan, but I simply found the quote funny! That's all!!! I drew my conclusion about rap LLLOOONNNNGGG before his quote and had no hidden agenda behind my post. OK?

You will not hear math rock and post rock being played on mainstream radio stations.
Math rock is highly virtuosic music and you'll find it hardly sounds like 'generic alternative' radio friendly rock
I also find it interesting you have 55 plays of Earth in your last FM profile, yet the band regular incorporates post rock in their sound, yet funnily enough, you apparently hate alternative, so you must hate post rock tooWink

I was meaning more the Coldplay/Keane etc. sort of 'Alternative'! Tongue  (''Alternative' is too vague a term really...)

Seeing as how Greg Allman is a fantastic musician from a noble and bygone musical age, one ought to take his opinions into consideration.

Out of these, I'd have to go with rap. It's probably the most offensively bad of the list. R&B is a hell of lot better, though, and people who hate rap need to listen to Dälek. Avant-garde/industrial rap!

I´m going to second the guy who said factory pop. All that derivative and mass produced stuff that is aimed straight at an undiscriminating audience that consists mainly of 13-year old girls, where the artist might be able to sing and definitely can dance but wouldn't be able to write a song if her/his life depended on it. Created by marketing teams and coke head producers with not one iota of artistic vision or ambition other than to "sell, sell, SELL" ... Hated it since I was a wee lad some 27-28 years ago (I remember Jellybean and Stock, Aiken & Waterman being the bane of my life in my early teens) and still do, with a passion.

If I don't like some music types then I don't listen to it. I give Rap another vote because to me it is not music - it is all about the lyrics which contain a lot of violence and sexism. The other very annoying quality is unless you are familiar with Rap-speak, it is incredibly hard work trying to understand what the piece is all about anyway. Confused.

I also think Rap has contributed to "pulling-down" a whole generation of kids and turning them into anti-social outcasts. Not good and dangerous to say the least!!

"Music is the Wine that fills the cup of Silence"

In terms of writing:

digging through old sources
finding pieces that go together
modifying them
combining disparate sources into a cohesive whole
having songs evolve over time
having songs tell a story (only some do this)

It's a different skill set than normal songwriting, but just as valid.

In terms of playing:

If you do it on the computer, not much (however, it's worth noting that much non-sampled music can be done on the computer as well)
If you do it live with turntables, getting everything in the right place at the right time can be incredibly difficult (which is why Kid Koala is such a virtuoso).  It's one of those things that seems easier than it actually is.

+1
Truth yo.
And this is being backed up by someone who plays guitar on a regular basis hoping to be a guitar virtuoso eventually.
Turntablism is not easy stuff at all.
Anyone can just try and do it, and chances are, they'll just be off time.
A good, serious DJ has the timing, creativity, technical ability, hand eye coordination, control and ear for subtle details that any good musician playing the piano, the guitar, trombone or whatever has, because it's truly a learned skill just the same.
Maybe doesn't sound musical to some people's ears, but hell, classical musicians can say that a band of heavy metal virtuosos playing technical metal is not musical either.
It's all music, just a matter of whether one likes it or not, and not just any retard can spin the turntables and kick ass.
