I know this comment is late to the party, but... I happen to be wearing a pair of HD280s at the moment, while they sound ok, the plastic headband cracks easily, they're pretty fragile. I only discovered that this was a design flaw after I Google'd this problem and found that many others had the same experience. I would avoid the HD280s.

Sennheiser let me down last year with the HD 515. I now use AKG K-512s and I'm very happy with them ... and they only cost me 30 EUR.

HD280 and HD580 are very good in their price range, but IMO HD25 is a must for portable use: Great efficiency, great neutrality and musicality and sturdy design.

Thanks for the input everybody.
My set came this weekend. They still need some considerable playtime to really open up and have me judge, but listened to Ives' Fourth Symphony as soon as they came and sounded pretty amazing. |

I got me a pair of these bad boys back in the 70's. Still got them, still sound great. All I've had to do is replace the foam ear pads.

I don't love the HD202s, but for $25 it is a great value. But for work I have a pair of Shure earbuds with basically earplugs that really block out external sound tremendously, and their sound is far better than the 202s for me (as it should be, I paid much more for the Shure headphones).
One of these days I may get a very high quality set of phones for the house, but I barely have time to listen to music at home. edit: Crap, just saw that this was about the 280 phones - sorry. Edited by NaturalScience - March 21 2009 at 20:09 |

^If that's the case, why don't you look into the shure stage earplugs- high quality sound with noise reduction. You won't look as nerdy as when wearing headphones in public.

Yeah I actually was leaning more towards the 580's but they don't have noise reduction, which is something I'm looking for as I wear headphones mostly while traveling buses/trains.

I have a 20 year old set of AKG 280c with the parabolic dual transducers that I love dearly. Had a nice set of Sennheisers before that (can't remember the model, but from 1984 and selling for $175.00 US at the time), but they weren't tough enough for my tendencies in those days. They fell apart in 3-4 years. The AKGs are still sounding great and still in one piece.
I also have a set of the Senn. HD202s for traveling, and like Harry says they are unbeatable for the money. I'd imagine the 480s would be a good buy, probably comparable to the AKG K240s? Edited by Trademark - March 02 2009 at 11:09 |

I have HD202s, and they work surprisingly well considering I only paid $25 for them. Everyone has told me that Sennheiser in general is a great value.

I was expecting to have to wait weeks to get a response. Thanks a lot.

I have a set of these. They are pretty good headphones for the price. Before these I had some Sony's in the same price range -- don't remember the model. The Sony's had a much more active high and low end, and maybe because of that were more tiring sonically to these ears. Which is to say after an hour or so I needed a break from the Sony's. I don't have that problem so much with the Sennheisers. I also use these with my synth, and again they do a decent job.

Any familiar with these headphones?
Based on some reviews they seem to be a great fit for my price range. Can anybody vouch for them or give me some counter-advice? |
