Topic: Fav King Crimson CD (no Live or Comps) Posted: October 28 2005 at 04:12 |
Of course ITCOTCK - one of prog's finest hours, if not the finest. Then I'd pick Red and Larks' (the former over the latter, as on Red Wetton sings much better). I also quite like Discipline from the Belew era.

This might be the hardest question that ive answered, there are too many different sounds of king crimson that its like comparing apples and orange. King Crimson is my favorite band so in a way there all my favorite but if you make me chose i'll go with Red since thats the one that started it for me

I was just looking at the Crimson page after posting this and noticed that
this was the biography:
"Michael GILES (drummer) and Robert FRIPP (guitarist) in 1968, they
formed a new group which included bassist / singer Greg LAKE and
saxophonist Ian McDONALD. So began KING CRIMSON, a group dedicated
body and soul to the aims of its leader and noted for incessant changes
of personnel.
Starting out as a heavy dark progressive rock band, using reeds,
woodwinds and mellotrons, they made subsequent changes to a more
experimental type of music in the 80's and a heavier metal-like sound in
the 90's. Through it all, they have maintained their professionalism and
have influenced hundreds of bands in the Avant-garde, Progressive and
Heavy Metal area, always being ahead of their time.
"In The Court Of Crimson King" has since been considered the founding
opus of a new musical genre progressive rock! All the reissues of live
concerts, whetever current-day or historic, contain very complete
booklets with numerous photos and lots of notes by Master FRIPP
himself!"
I really don't feel that this is a good introduction for the uninformed
person. If someone is looking up Crimson for the first time this tells them
almost nothing about the band and Fripp's direction changes from lineup
to lineup. I really would want a more extensive review of the band.
Anybody else?

Lark's Tongues....
I say this though I haven't heard all of the Belew albums. The creative
atmosphere that is presented in Lark's Tongues part 1 is incredible.

Right now, Red. However, Lizard is phenomenal, ITCOTCK is classic, Discipline is fun as hell, and all the rest are equally awesome besides Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair...and Islands.
I listened to Islands a couple times through yesterday and just could not get into it. It's too quiet, too laid back. Formentera Lady almost put me to sleep every single time.

Larks Tongue In Aspic - followed by Red and Islands. Actually I like all KC pre-1975.

"In the Court of the Crimson King" gets my vote. A prog masterpiece and a defining moment of the genre. "Red" would also be up near the top.
But then, they have such a wide and varied catalog that its hard to pick just one.

I voted Islands too. I wouldn't necessarily consider it the greatest, but it's my favorite.

Without a shadow of a doubt, In the Court of the Crimson King. This album is a becnhmark standard for all prog that has come after it. But forget about prog,. If you happen to care about rock and roll, you have to have this in your collection. 36 years later, the album still radiates a lot of intensity. Very few bands have been able to match it,including latter versions of Crimson themselves... |

Voted for Red - an amazing dynamically powerful album.
Surprised Discipline hasn't received a vote so far. Frame by Frame and Indiscipline are excellent imo !!

Larks Tongues in aspic, without a doubt. No weak moment anywhere, best line-up they had.

Am I the only one who voted for Lizard? Hmmm...why? I voted for it because Lark's tongues or the court will win anyway and because it's as good as the two...
