From NC to TLLDOB - in other words, what they call the "Gabriel-era" of Genesis.  Anything after "Duke" is God-awful.  Best line-up was from NC to TLLDOB:  Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins.  The best Genesis music was produced when these five were together during 1971-1974...

I first heard Genesis when I was around thirteen years old and the album was Foxtrot. Suppers Ready remains one of my most revered Prog tracks. "I know what I like....", "Carpet Crawlers", "Get em out by Friday" off of their various early albums - what can I say - they held a mystique for me then that probably fueled my love for prog rock music.
Phil Collins guided the band - after Duke - to the quagmire of pop music and I don't enjoy what he did to one of the best bands of it's or any others time.

Down the line along came Marillion (the Fish era) and I was happy once again.

Now all I can do in that regard is listen to the old albums and pine for another similar entity to come along.
Arena came pretty close at one time but not close enough.

Any advice out there regarding similar music and I mean good musicianship with theatrical expressive vocals.

One of the few things on which I agree with the notorious George Starosin.  Yes, they were all about Gabriel and Hackett for me, more so Hackett.  I don't really fuss over Bank-synths as much as he does; in fact I love his contributions to all the albums upto Wind and Wuthering, which is where I get off. But without the aforementioned twosome, they wouldn't be my favourite band of all time. As Hughes said, there's been so much discussion on Genesis before, so it's difficult to add much. To those new to Genesis, I would like to say, "Take Selling England and Trick of the Tail out or rotation and listen to Nursery Cryme and experience a different dimension of Genesis." Smile

The best prog rock band ever in my opinion.

I love everything they done between 1970 and 1980, and thereafter, I like selected tracks, but generally I think the 80's was a tragic time for the band.

Tony Banks is my overall favourite prog keyboardist and composer, and Phil Collins would be in my top 5 best drummers.

For me their flare was for writing strong melodies and wonderful sweeping dynamic chord progressions. I think they wrote some of the most emotional rock music to come out of the 70's. My favorite album - and this changes - is probably a 'Trick of the Tail', followed by 'The lamb' and then 'WAW'

In my opinion I just consideer Genesis in their Progressive era, including ATOTT (one of my favourites) and WAW.
Sometimes my favorite album is NC and sometimes I change my opinion to SEPTP. This last one I can't like The Battle on Epping Forest. I think it''s a little bored, that's why NC is my fav.
Other thing about them. The Hackett guitar could appear a little bit more, hã? The keyboards (I love the sound of Banks) are always in the first plan.

Genesis is in number 6 of my top prog ranking.

Hi, friends.

Despite the resume on Prog Archives, I would like to know your opinion about this wonderful Prog Band.

When and your feelings when you heard them at the first time. Your favorite albuns and music. Favorites members. Worst albums etc.

I think that there will be a lot of good and inteligent answers here.

Thanks.Smile
