Permanent Waves, for me...
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Well, before I would have said 2112, but now I'm stuck between 3 great albums, so I really can not vote...

not a big fan of Rush at all, and actually a bit of a 'prog Rush?' antagonist but Farewell to Kings was by far my favorite album from them.

2112 only because it was the first I've heard. I equaly like A farewell, Permanent Waves, Mooving pictures and Hemispheres.

And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I
don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

If being forced to choose one, I would go for Permanent Waves. This record has real character and for me it has always sounded deeper and more profound musically than Moving Pictures, the record that is forever bound to cast an unfortunate shadow upon it.

In addition to all six songs being nothing short of brilliant, the track order itself on PW is one of the most perfect I have ever come across, giving the record a wonderful flow all the way to the ultimate Rush climax that is "Natural Science". Very hard to beat that, although Hemispheres and Grace Under Pressure come close.

My hat goes off to those of you, who will be brave enough to vote for Hold Your Fire -a remarkable record in its own right.

I was made to love magic

Signals  have remained to be the closest to me, though I don't necessarily think it's the best (Hemispheres maybe). Signals was the first I heard at the age of 14 or 15.

The hard-core Rush-kies (I've only got 8 albums) tend to talk up the likes of Hemispheres & Moving Pictures, but I liked 'em a little rawer, 2112 is my #1 and Caress Of Steel is runner-up ...
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

Permanent Waves.

But closely followed by Hemispheres. Then Moving Pictures, Farwell to kings, Caress of steel, and after that, well the rest. And Power Windows rules.

Permanent Waves.

And honestly I think Hold Your Fire is one of the high points of their career too.  If nothing else I think it's Neil's peak as a lyricist, and the songs are amazingly crafted even if they're simple by Rush standards.

Also it's a very fun album for me to put on and just play along to almost the whole thing with my bass (still have trouble with Turn the Page...)
