Believe it or not, some of Vander's live performances of "The Last Seven Minutes" were better than his studio effort. 1979 Palais Desportes for example. On Youtube there is a 1979 vid of him drumming the beginning of Retrovision really energetically during practice. The studio drumming on "Retrospektiw I-II" is impossible to improve or duplicate. Those are his most impressive technical displays.

For subtlety and artistry, the studio version of K.A. is my favorite.

Being a drummer too, I have to agree with Moving Pictures. Attahk has some fantastic drumming, especially on the track "The Last Seven Minutes". and "Live/Hhai" and "Üdü Wüdü" definitely have to be named too. Vander is one of my three favourite drummers, as you can see in my signature pic.

If the thread has to do with Magma or drumming, I will most likely answer it... especially if it has both. Wink

I actually listened to Kohntark Part 1 in the car today; it never ceases to amaze me. Clap

I agree with MP on Kohntark and De Futura. Amazingly good performance!

Now for a non-drummer's advice. Embarrassed

1.  'Retrospektïw I-II', most especially 'Theusz Hamtaahk'.  Magnificent live album, and a really wonderful overall sound - you'll be able to hear the drumming very clearly.

2.  The eternal classic 'Live/Hhaï' is also wonderful, and the sublime 'Mëkanïk Zaïn' should fit the bill nicely.

3.  'K.A.' is thrice wonderful Embarrassed Heart, and the production is excellent - you can hear every drumbeat and it's got this 'live in the studio' feel - as if the band is right there in front of you.

4.  'Attahk' may not be 'classic Magma' but it is a lot of fun, and it has some absolutely fantastic drumming!  The drum sound is ace on this album - really bold and in your face!

5.  I really don't know what to pick for choice number 5.  There is too much to choose from... but I think I'll plump for 'De Futura' - as mentioned above, this is from 'Üdü Wüdü', but you really must check out the INSANE 'De Futura' live clip on Youtube (or in fact I think you can see it via Magma's entry on PA).  Your friend could learn a thing or two from that, I daresay... Wink LOL

Enjoy! Smile

Holy crap, don't make me choose!! Ouch

This is completely subject to change, but... I'll try it I suppose:
1. Kohntark (from Live/Hhai)
2. De Futura (from Udu Wudu)
3. Theusz Hamtaahk (from Retrospektiw)
4. Mekanik Destrukiw Kommandoh (from Retrospektiw)
5. The Last Seven Minutes (from Attahk)---This is just a personal favorite of mine. Embarrassed

Christian Vander is one of my top three drum idols of all time. Wink

I'm new to Magma, and a friend of mine is a drummer who wants to try new things. I've heard that Christian Vander was a pretty good drummer, and I'd like to know what PA thinks that some of his best drum performances are, for my enjoyment of listening to drums (and their music altogether), and also for my friend to learn. Smile
