Stravinsky was more prog than Genesis.

1. To me Dream Theater isn't very progressive, they're more mimicking
whatever's popular. Mike Portnoy himself claims to be more of a fan
than a musician, and their songs are often (if not always) structured
as "a Muse-part here and a Metallica-bit there" etc.
2. the original progressive rock (early 70's) was so called because it
WAS progressive (see other threads) as in pushing the boundaries of
music, and it died a slow death in the mid-70's. since then most
groundbreaking stuff happened elsewhere (extreme metal, electronic
stuff, rap etc until that lost its progressive too). and the so-called
modern prog is hardly progressive and groundbreaking, just the mixing
of styles is not groundbreaking because it has been done a zillion
times before since at least the 60's. it might still be enjoyable.
3. the most progressive current band on PA would be Meshuggah as they
are progressive with rhythm (progessive melodic as been done to death
apparently) and with their sense of rhythm they are closer to
Stravinsky than anything else. just my 3 cents

Somehow this thread has become less fun now that it's been moved to Just For Fun.

I'd say the same of Genesis actually outside of the masterpiece that is SEbtP.

outrageous... to you all perhaps.. not to me... Genesis is the common cure for insomnia.. and doesn't belong on the same page as other groups here. Side 2 of Tarkus is frickin great .. and those who think it is FILLER.. do more reading of others opinions than actual listening. Pawn Hearts is the most disappointing prog album ever made... simply... it could have been one of the best prog albums ever.. and they fell flat ... Rush peaked at Caress of Steel... and have gone downhill... for ....over 30 years

Is it even possible to have outrageous and constructive views? Outrageous is kind of an antonym to civil anyway, plus civil outrage is a fraction as entertaining. And to add something to the thread...
Emerson, Lake & Palmer is the definition of the negative connotation of "pretentious". But they were still great guys! :)

Heres my two cents...
Jethro Tull arent prog at all
Foxtrot is the worst of all the PG Genesis albums
Post Rock is the new prog rock
Post metal pwns all other forms of metal
I like Magma!!!!
Sigur ros, Porc tree, and Isis still havent made a masterpiece album
Avant garde rock is the most pointless form of music I have yet to hear.

no, but it is how you get people to laugh uncontrollably ..and King Crimson wasn't the first prog band, they simply released the first prog album with most of the components in place ..and even that's debatable
