Two new releases from The Work!
Featuring:
Tim Hodgkinson - Rick Wilson - Mick Hobbs -
Bill Gilonis
Any album by THE WORK is difficult to categorize,
or to pigeon-hole. The band’s output has been labelled everything from
“Post-Punk” to “Acid Jazz”, and yet any sort of classification just
doesn’t seem to do the music justice. The approach seems to exhibit the
complexity of Progressive Rock, whilst throwing that aesthetic to the
dogs, in lieu of assimilating the energy and power of early Punk. THE
WORK were among the first few post-Henry Cow bands to purposefully break
their own mould in an attempt to conquer new ground, thus creating
music that seems more comfortable resting on a bed of nails than
precious laurels.
|
|
|
SEE
was the final The Work album to be issued during the band's lifetime.
It showcased some of the very best material of their later years, and
a penchant to move into a different, more mature setting. The
electronic experimentation here perfectly meshes with post-punk
appeals and terrorist-like energy, giving the listener plenty of
reasons to be drawn-in to their psychotic world of extremes. Each
instrument plays perfectly off of the others to send everything,
"somewhere else", whilst somehow holding together perfectly amidst
some fiendish, "white knuckler" time relations. Though the vocals on
this album were more "sung" that "shrieked" (as evidenced on their
earliest recordings), the instrumental parts, especially the drumming,
keep the group in line with its radically apparent love for
showcasing a primal ap
proach. This has been out-of-print for a number of years, so it's
great to have it back again. |
THE 4th WORLD
is the band's long-lost, never before issued, very last album, from
1994. Succeeding "SEE" by some two years, it shares that album's
aesthetics and approach - an economy of means, and superior
song-writing/ playing - even when compared to their earlier albums.
One wouldn't guess it was recorded live at a gig in Breisgau, because
the sound is, quite honestly, superlative, and is even better than any
of their studio albums. The original, mono recordings (by Volkmar
Miedtke) were meticulously reprocessed into stereo years later by Udi
Koomran, and the sound has really been, "opened up". The playing
itself is also powerful and thoughtful. Especially important is the
fact that only two of the twenty songs on this disc were released on
previous albums, thus making The Work's entire catalog finally compl
ete, and now wholly in print. |

The entire THE WORK catalog is now in print on AD HOC RECORDS.

New Arrivals at ReR USA...
Just
when you think it’s safe to go back into the water, ka-pow! here comes
the new Univers Zero record, to shake up anyone’s non-plussed musical
life. This weapon’s grade stuff, the best UZ in many years, harkens in
a new era for the band, whist retaining all the juicy bits of enticing
Zedisms that long-standing fans have come to expect. Firstly, this is
Daniel Denis’ most polished and performed grouping in over two decades;
so these pieces were finely honed on stages across Europe, and Mexico
too, before being committed to the recording process. Secondly, this
recording has a real BAND sound because it was made live in the studio
with just a few scant overdubs, though one would never know it because
the instrument separation, EQ and overall frequencies are immaculate.
(It truly is an outstanding achievement in sound). Thirdly, Daniel has
actively asked the other members of the band to compose to their
hearts’ content, which Andy Ki
rk (keyboards),
Kurt Baude (reeds) and Michel Berkmans (bassoon) have all seen fit to
do iin spades. Baude’s pieces especially push the envelope, Kirk’s 12
minute mini-epic -Warrior- will please his fans from the Ceux Du Dehors
and Heatwave periods, and Berkmans’ Retour de Foire has become a
personal favorite with the band members (and yours truly, to boot). As
well, Daniel’s new compositions show an even further scope than his
usual, excellent output. And his drumming- yikes, like always, it’s
from some other place altogether. He is a master of syncopation and
finesse, and is percussively able to say an immense amount between the
beats, an area where most drummers have little clue that life even
exists. This is a highly recommended and most welcome release, so come
on in, heh heh, the water’s fine.
| Kimara Sajn: Life Stories
This is latest album from Kimara Sajn, who is a multi-instrumentalist
and composer who studied composition at the University of British
Columbia and in California with Wally Bower, Paul Chihara and Miklos
Rozsa. He has produced numerous independent releases of his music since
1978 on the SCS/Precognitive label.
|
|
Radio Massacre International: Time and Motion
At its root, Time and Motion very much has their "Berlin-school
electronic music" sound intact, with music that gradually develops in
the manner of the classic pioneers of this sound; the synthesizers and
clouds of guitars take us all on a journey into the cosmos! |
|
New York Art Quartet Old Stuff
This release is truly a remarkable archival find! Formed in the summer
of 1964, although the New York Art Quartet existed for barely a year
and a half, great interest remains in their work. They consisted of
co-leaders John Tchicai (alto sax), who participated in John Coltrane's
ground-breaking Ascension album and Roswell Rudd (trombone), considered
to be the first free-jazz trombonist, along with bassist Don Moore and
drummer Milford Graves. |
|
Brown vs Brown: Odds and Evens
After 5 years of joint creative exploits and playing hundreds of
concerts throughout Europe, Brown vs Brown has developed a musical
universe that categorically denies stylistic description. Seemingly
contrasting elements clash and recombine: meticulous composition vs.
improvisation, complexity vs. raw energy, and breakneck stumble rhythms
vs. irresistible swing.
|
|
Algernon: Ghost Surveillence Ghost
Surveillance is Algernon's third album and is their first on a label
able to reach a wider audience. Their music brings a lot of influences
together in surprising and entertaining ways. A quick listen to the
download sample will show you why we have such great enthusiasm for
this band, as they manage to be quite accessible while pushing
stylistic boundaries and exploring new paths. |

Though
much of the music press is quick to cite Aranis as the greatest thing
to happen to Chamber Rock in recent years, this group’s styling, sound,
and compositions prove that they are not Classical, nor Rock, nor a
hybrid of the two. Aranis are onto something unique, and the only label
that could possibly qualify, due merely to the instrumentation, is that
they are “Acoustic”. Anything beyond this equivocally open-ended
definition would only manage sell them short. They’ve been going strong
for some seven years now, and with each new release their work forages
on relentlessly, both ignoring every idiomatic description in its path,
and taking the utmost joy in rejecting any notion to dabble around in
middle grounds. This one-of-a kind approach has lead to festival
invitations, where Aranis has been known to share the stage with
notable, long-standing, reputable “bands” that are much more easily
tagged; The invariable result is that they emerge as the mo
st important, tightest, professional and musically elucidated crew in
the lot.
This
latest album, SONGS FROM MIRAGE, finds Aranis partially augmented by a
vocal trio, whose presence adds a new element of excellence, while not
interfering with the group’s penchant to diffuse their approach. In
fact, the closest harmonic references for the singers might be part
Trio Bulgarka, part Carl Orff, part Art Bears, part Clannad – which
only furthers the end result toward a perplexing degree of
accomplishment. The voices perfectly accompany the instruments
(violins, button accordion, flute, piano, guitar and upright bass)
through an array of compositional techniques and flavors that slither
around like eels in the listener’s cortex. And, while each melodic and
rhythmic idea is immaculately composed and performed, one is never
quite sure what exactly might happen next. Some of it is ominous, some
of it sounds dangerous, much of it is beautiful, and all of it is
virtuosic. As well, the recording and sonic quality are magnificent,
and the pac
kaging is a gorgeous, sublimely designed 6-panel, hardboard glossy
digi-pack.
This
is a project that everyone, and I mean everyone, will enjoy, both
because there is nothing else like it, and because it boldly reaches
for a musical place where we all secretly wish to be tickled ! - David
Kerman

Fred Frith: Nowhere, Sideshow, Thin AirThis
is Fred's sixth CD of music for dance, featuring three commissions by
three different choreographers each sharing, as Fred says ' a certain
obsession with melodic deconstruction.' Two of them feature - and were
especially written for - the remarkable violinist Carla Kihlstedt. Fred
and Carla perform one of them (Fred playing a huge array of instruments
here as on all pieces), are joined by Fred Guiliano, (samples) and Gail
Brand (trombone) on another, while the third features Fred, Hande Erdem
(violin) and Threresa Wong (cello). These are complex studio
compositions characterised by a deceptive simplicity, layers and
plateaux, rhythm and colour. |
|
Frith, Fred: Impur IIImpur
II is totally different from Impur I - which was a deconstructed,
spatialised simultaneity of musical events that could only be heard
through open windows or by wandering through rooms - Impur 2 took the
form of an unannounced performance across which audience members had to
stumble by chance (and then collect their friends - or not). Both
events formed part of a commission by L'Ecole Nationale de Musique de
Villurbanne in May 1996.This recording, painstakingly edited and
re-mastered by Fred, appears as a full-on concert by a large 19 strong
ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing.

Sun Ra: Disco 3000
In
the winter months of 1977-1978, philosopher, pianist and bandleader Sun
Ra was in Italy. The Italian tour resulted in releases on Sun Ra's own
Saturn label, all of which have long been out of print and all but
impossible to find. With the re-release of DISCO 3000 one of the most
celebrated of these elusive Saturn gems is once more available. |
|
Moore, R. Stevie: Phonography
Phonography was Stevie's first LP release, and an out-of-the-blue
masterpiece: terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional
qualities of great pop. A gifted songwriter, R Stevie (son of Bob
Moore, Elvis' bassist) grew up and was steeped in Nashville's
countrypolitanism; but, as a recidivistusa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RERUSA&Product_Code=7545">
rebel, he inevitably slipped into strange byways, following his own,
unique path into celebrated obscurity - as this strange and compelling
record attests. |
|
Pere Ubu: London * TexasA
missing piece of the Ubu jigsaw, and a fine memento of a great band,
London Texas is a satisfyingly hi-fi live recording of the sadly
short-lived line-up that toured briefly between the arrival of Eric
Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. Certainly it's the best
recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section - though the
whole band is on lean-back-intense concert form. Coming back to it,
this was the end of a particular era, of a certain kind of band: the
songs are economical and tightly arranged but harmonically elaborated -
with strongly performative and musical underpinning (there's a new
aesthetic in place now); it's an approach that takes no prisoners. |

Ad Hoc Records presents:
Well,
it’s finally here, after years of hard work, and we’re really proud of
it. Roger Trigaux’s (ex-Univers Zero) band, PRESENT, returns with a
vengeance on this release: a new studio album CD, plus a three-hour
DVD. These are compositions that spread out and expand upon the style
of the band’s latest works, NUMBER 6 and HIGH INFIDELITY, and include
the Trigaux duo’s latest epic, VERTGES, as well as Present’s slick
version of JACK THE RIPPER, and Pierre Chevalier’s fiery, A LAST DROP.
The DVD is comprised of live footage from the band’s two RIO France
performances in 2007, and roughly half of the Gouveia Art Rock Festival
performance from 2005. As an added bonus, there is archival footage,
some of which dates back to the early days of the band, featuring
Daniel Denis and Christian Genet. All of this has been exquisitely
recorded and mixed by Udi Koomran, with post-video work by Asaf
Carmeli, both of whom were out to re-define the parameters of
modern-day Rock In Oppos
ition products. The disks come in a spiffy, 8-panel digipack.

Blast: Sift Equally
at home with the discipline of composition and the tightrope of
improvisation Blast have evolved a fluid, pointillistic, unfathomable
but transparent musical language that seamlessly integrates - over very
short durations - highly complex writing and very free ranging
improvisation, allowing the two languages to merge and combine into a
new kind of logical exposition that makes sense but can't be
reverse-engineered into its component parts. |

Messiaen et autor de Messiaen Onde Martenot
A signature collection of exquisite works for onde Martinot and piano
by Olivier Messiaen, N'Guyen Thien Dao, Jacques Charpentier and Tristan
Murail, exploring the many voices of this extraordinary instrument. The
onde (or ondes musicales or le Martenot) was first demonstrated at the
Paris Conservatoire in 1928 and immediately attracted the attention of
Varese, Milhaud, Koechlin, Jolivet, Honegger and Messiaen, who all
wrote for it - cumulatively ensuring its survival.... |

VRIL: The Fatal Duckpond
After a break of six years, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake and Lukas Simonis,
now with added ingredient Pierre Omer, present the second volume of
recordings by the elusive VRIL - a band who revive and update both the
great institution of the guitar instrumental and the now sadly
neglected practice of collective arrangement, intense rehearsal and
live studio performance.

Heiner Goebbels The Italian ConcertoWith
Chris Cutler, The Icarus Ensemble, Sira and Boubacar Djebate, Johannes
Bauer, Tiziano Popoli, Jocelyn B. Smith and the Orchestra of the Teatro
Popoli, Bologna, conducted by Yoichi Sugiyama, this is a rare release
from one of the pioneers of contemporary cross-platform composition.
Working with montage, superposition and elements of different musical
languages, Heiner sidesteps genre to concentrate on the material. |

Gareth Williams of This Heat: Flaming Tunes
When Gareth Williams died on Christmas Eve 2001 at the age of 48, the
world lost a huge personality and a unique creative talent, yet little
is known of his work outside of the legendary group This Heat. With
this first official release on Compact Disc of Williams's solo and
collaborative works from 1985, Life and Living Records take the first
steps to correcting this imbalance. "Flaming Tunes" was recorded by
Gareth Williams and Mary Currie with input from a variety of
contributors including fellow This Heat member Charles Bullen, long
term collaborators Martin Harrison and Rick Wilson, Mick Hobbs and
others. |
|
Honsinger & Simonini: Call Me Us Cellist
Honsinger and pre-existing media manipulist Simonini with a piece that
falls between radio art, music theatre and... and what? A highly
unusual performance in 10 parts that deploys its materials sparingly
and intelligently and, through a combination of skill, spontaneity and
ambiguity, arrives at something seemingly too controlled and precise to
be improvised, but too complex and wilful to have been composed. |

driven trip into the Electro-Mechanical sub-underground, built around a

Henry Cow: Stockholm & Goteborg
...
the first new release in 30 years from Henry Cow, and the first
featuring Georgina Born, the group's bassist from 1976-78. It fills in
some of the history between In Praise of Learning (1975) and Western
Culture (1978) and offers music that has not been heard on record until
now.
Kimara Sajn: Why Not ? No.
Polyethylene
Pet is a conceptual art project originally started by Kimara Sajn (in a
series of recordings with Erling Wold and Brian Woodbury in 1978) and
later developed with Chris Diurni in 1980 for performances at the world
renowned InterDada '80 dada art festival.
+1: The Naked Free
... gentler cousin of Polyethylene Pet. The focus is more on music and
the listening context. While it tends to seem more like a normal
musical event, it can, like it's cousin, quickly turn from accessible
to very complex and difficult music.
Polyethylene Pet / +1: 1000 Satellites
In
the spirit of Dada and future culture jammers, the project tackled
issues such as the dialectic between audience and performer, art and
entertainment, popular culture and media.

Stunning performances from John Zorn, Tenko, and turntable revolutionary Christian Marclay, with idiosyncratic use of the latest (1986) digital technology made this one of Fred's most successful releases. Painstakingly re-mastered from the original tapes. Fred Frith & John Zorn: The Art of Memory II... Recordings from the relatively early days of what has become an enduring and exhilarating musical partnership. On the borderline between music and chaos, these live performances from one of the most vital periods of New York's illustrious musical history.
Sun Ra: Media Dreams... Companion to Disco 3000, made on the same classic Italian quartet tour with John Gilmore, Michael Ray (trumpet) and the minimal but perfect Luqman Ali (drums). Ra himself plays piano and electronic keyboards, including the mysterious Crumar Mainman, which Ra describes as 'like a piano, organ, clavichord, cello, violin and brass instruments' and which also, importantly, has a facility for pre-programmed bass-lines and electronic percussion - which Ra uses constantly and to great effect in this small ensemble setting - and seldom, if ever, elsewhere. Steven Kovacs Tickmayer: Cold Peace Counterpoints... A suite of fiendishly complex compositions for mixed real and virtual resources. The real are Bob Drake, Djorge Delibasic, Pegja Milosavljevic and Chris Cutler who, between them, cover electric guitar, bass, drums and virtuoso violin, but it's mainly Stevan here, who plays all kinds of keyboards, strings, double bass and zither, on top of samples and software. Nikola Kodjabashia: The Most of Now... A suite of highly imaginative variations on a theme that meanders with purpose through a unique musical landscape, in which reflections of everything from lounge music, Macedonian folk instrumentals, Byzantine church liturgy, contemporary orchestra composition and exotica, rub shoulders without parody or embarrassment. Michael Makseymenko: Business Cide... Wild lurching swing complexity, ridiculous tempi, great rhythms, sudden mood changes, fine compositions and music that is always to the point. No fat, just coffee and cigarettes. Features the classic Kraldursanstalten band (there’s a lot of “Vooddoo Boogie” here), plus John French, Henry Kaiser, Andy West and more. Brainville: Trial by Headline... Three old hands out of Soft Machine, Gong and Henry Cow stretch already elastic musical material into various shapes, tie it in knots and generally have a good time. Lol Coxhill, Charles Hayward & Hugh Hopper: Clear Frame... Featuring the all-star cast of Charles Hayward, Hugh Hopper, Lol Coxhill and Orphy Robinson (vibraphone, steel drums), with guest Robert Wyatt on cornet. Eight strong pieces in a rock-inflected, improvisation-empowered, loose - but not too loose - free-associating open style that has become as rare as hen's teeth today. Miners of Banal (member of The Work and Ne Zhdali)... This is "Work/Hat Shoe", Bill Gilonis' and Swiss dummer, Trixa Arnold's eccentric song group. With Orchestra Murphy singer and Ne Zhdali bassist on board.

Extreme Metal is perhaps the only current form of rock music to live up to its nomenclature (ie. “Jazz” has lost its pizazz, “Progressive Rock” stopped progressing long ago, etc.) As the only descendant of the original school of Rock and Roll now able to adequately extend the innovative nature, blue collar appeal and shocking results of its predecessor, Extreme Metal survives on a fringe that allows it to unfold in natural, artistic terms. Whereas we couldn’t in all good conscience recommend the whole genre across the board, there are a growing handful of bands that we feel are musically excellent, politically relevant and artistically worthy of investigation. Part of their appeal is that each acts as a radically self-administered, self-promoting, self-propagating entity, working outside the mainstream of the music industry. But more importantly, these bands share with us some of our most precious maxims: They create music that & ldquo;extends the vocabulary of sound, that transgresses rules, that explores the possibilities of the latest technologies, captures great performances, gives great pleasure and bears repeated listening”. Being almost equal parts of both music and art, they all go beyond the normal ilk of what is today considered Metal, and are highly recommended for those with intrepid tastes and open minds.

PILLORY “No Life Guard At The Gene Pool” (Boston, Mass.) - Deathcore/Thrash
This album is an anomaly; It’s an almost unprecedented conflux of Death Metal and Metalcore, and is extremely brutal. Thick, open guitar inversions and polyrhythmic drumming bring to mind Beefheart’s Trout Mask (if it were played at 78 rpm with tons of distortion, pig squeals and blast beats; but it goes well beyond that description, approaching a place where modern metal ends and serious insanity begins). It’s mostly a high-energy affair, with blasts of musically acerbic lunacy gingerly sprinkled throughout, to push things even more over the edge. Pillory are masterful musicians in technical terms, meaning that for all of its insanity, this album is executed in a seemingly effortless fashion and, against all odds, is a fiery joy to listen to.

DECAPITATED “Organic Hallucinosis” (Krosnow, Poland) - Tech Death
This group started out when the musicians’ average age was just 14. Now, at the ripe old age of 23, they’ve released their 4th album, Organic Hallucinosis, which is an astounding feat of Technical Death Metal. One needn’t listen to this album with sympathetic ears regarding their young age, as it simply puts everything else of its kind to shame (with the exception of Trauma, who are a close second). It’s fast and furious, to be sure, but makes perfect compositional sense. Time signatures and time relations are baffling, yet never appropriated for confusion. Often huge, open, multi-tracked, distorted guitar chords approximate strange, sonic spaces worthy of This Heat or Dunaj, but to sped-up and mammoth proportions previously unheard of in any sort of “progressive” music. The recording and mix are both excellent, and there are strange, experimental noises moving about in the mix. On the w hole, it’s a white-knuckler of a listen, and extremely adventurous.

CAR BOMB “Centralia” (New York, NY) - Progressive Metal
These guys admit that they are compulsive-obsessive nerds, and the brainiac nature of their day jobs and hobbies (astronomer, quantum physicist, computer programmer etc.) has seeped its way into the music on this album: it is strangely complex, having been picked apart, written and re-written, re-assessed and re-worked before being offered for public perusal. The brilliance, then, is that this album seems “natural” in its complexity, and hasn’t lost one iota of integrity as a result of such scrutiny. Though some of the ideas are over the top (song titles elucidating the band’s name like, “Pieces of You” and “Gum Under the Table”), overall the concept works intelligently. The only close musical connection might be The Work’s “Slow Crimes”; at least I suspect appreciators of that album will find much to enjoy in Car Bomb’s approach. But “Centralia” is more complex, fu rious and brutal, having been afforded a quarter of a century’s time to move beyond the virtuosity of yesterday’s post-punk accomplishments.

GAZA “I Don’t Care Where I Go When I Die” (Salt Lake City, Utah) - Hardcore/Grind
According to Gaza’s record company, “I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die is an absolutely bleak & terrifying experience… This is some of the most hateful and frightening music that we will probably ever release”. All hype aside, it’s also one of the most artistically successful and forward-thinking technical metal disks available, and can more aptly be described as “artfully brutal”. This band has the maturity to offset their screaming, detuned madness with some absolutely gorgeous passages that unravel exponentially, making the brutal parts both veritable and all the more intense. As well, their breakdowns break down utterly and completely, often into nothingness. Gaza ignores finger-shredding metal techniques, choosing instead to work on an almost corporeal and thoroughly emotional level. Thankfully, this foresight is their creative strength, and they deliver the goods in a confident matter, mostly unparalleled by t heir peers.

|
CATTLE DECAPITATION - “Karma Bloody Karma” San Diego, Calif.) - Deathgrind
One of the fastest and most furious bands around, Cattle Decapitation’s music is a direct outlet for their highly misanthropic views: All members are devout vegetarians and animal rights activists to an almost perversely radical extent. Their album covers are famously grotesque as a means to denigrate the “meat industry”, and the music itself is a veritable slaughterhouse of brutal opposition, though it is composed and performed with much perspicacity, strength and energy. Other topics range from the inequitable distribution of wealth to the complete disgust for humanity’s place in history, arguably making the band Extreme Metal’s most precious voice of modern protest.

|
MESHUGGAH - “Catch 33” (Umea, Sweden) -Math-Thrash
Metalheads will already be familiar with this band, and prog fans may know of bandleader Fredrik Thordendal from his solo album “Sol Niger Within”, which features Mats & Morgan. In my book this disk is simply the most palatable Thrash/Math-Rock released to date. While most of Meshuggah’s other albums are quite nice, they tend to go somewhat overboard, with insane time relations that can often be musically distracting for all but the most autistic of Poindexters. Here the band calms down a bit, and the music really shines. These great compositions are more succinct and to the point, whilst still unfolding maturely by means of enumeration; And they actually “groove” somewhat, which is a welcome change. This disk was nominated for a Grammy in Sweden – will wonders never cease (?).

|
TRAUMA - “DetermiNation” (Gdansk, Poland) - Death Metal
Trauma share a distinct commonality with Decapitated not only by cultural means, but in the ways their influences reveal themselves. Both bands are purebred Polish Death Metal. Both seem to steer away from of most thrash and grind imperatives. Both offer a clear and precise approach and sound. But, while both bands greatly utilize extraneous noises to add to their sonic landscapes, they do so to different ends: Where Decapitated’s soundstage seems otherworldly and ethereal, Trauma’s is wholly urban, and tends to remind one of the frantic pace of city life gone amok, with special emphasis on its trials and perils. Their lyrics are harsh realities (as they see them) and are offered in guttural growls of animosity : “Anger in clenched fists, hatred in bloodshot eyes”. There’s nothing pretty about it, nor should there be.

FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW – “Not One Word Has Been Omitted” E.P. (2004) (Ohio-Pennsylvania, USA) – Progressive Metalcore
Originally issued with the title “The Cassandra Complex” this five-song EP from 2004 is the first commercially available recording by FASSW. As it pre-dates their excellent “Delenda” album by a relatively short span of time, one can site quite a few similarities in style: Lush but bizarre chords, built-up themes bordering on mathrock, sensitive lyrical content and urgent delivery are the band’s norm. The main differences might seem trivial, being mostly song length (these songs are usually a bit longer), a slightly more sinister delivery, and a change of vocalist for the newer record, who can jar the senses equally as much as the one heard here. Still, for my money, “Delenda” is FASSW’s classic to date; but this EP makes an excellent companion, and is, in truth, almost as mighty.

FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW – “Delenda” (Ohio-Pennsylvania, USA) – Progressive Metalcore
This is the sophomore release by one of the most interesting American groups in recent years. While on the whole it must be said that this is overall better than their debut EP (“Not One Word Was Omitted”, which in itself was amazing), there is a caveat: Of the 10 songs that comprise this disk, seven are extremely excellent; the remaining three are, for me at least, less interesting and musically out-of-place. But the great ones are more than worth the price of the disk: Six of these songs, “Dark Waters Of Thought”, “A Piece Of History Written in English”, “The Crusher”, “These Lights Above Us”, “Mourning For Morning” and “Soft Green Fields” are my very favorite discoveries so far of 2007, if that’s any indication of my fondness for this album. These are very well composed songs (hey, its even a concept album), arranged meticulously, and played in perfect taste, with only the slightest hint of old school Progressive Rock influence. Besides an inherent sense of urgency and power, somehow - amidst some gloomy subject matter - there is an obvious and monumental sense of uplifting glory in this recording, as if it were able to act as a soundtrack to a modern accounting of the Punic Wars. But, there’s nothing meretricious or overblown here; When it works, which it almost invariably does, it is sublime.

|
THE ACACIA STRAIN – “The Dead Walk” (Springfield, Mass.) - Metalcore
This band is now world-class and famous. But that can’t detract from the fact that this is arguably the very strongest metalcore disk ever recorded, making even their own back catalog seem tame by comparison. Mid tempo songs, beefed-up and tuned-down, are cause for this to be a real brain-bash of a disk. The guitars are as dense as the Baskervilles’ fog, and the drum sound is superb throughout. To boot, every composition here is intelligent, though lyrically harsh, and expertly executed without the need to show off. Some songs in particular are sure to leave most listeners’ jaws dangling: “Pity”, “Burnface”, “Angry Mob Justice” and “Whoa! Shut It Down” to name a few. But special mention need be made of, “The Demolishor”, as the instrumental middle section is rhythmically godlike, losing and re-defining the downbeat in a way I’d have never imagined (I kept hitting the r ewind button more than 2 dozen times to fully understand it). An extremely intense recording, highly recommended, that hardly ever lets up.
|
|
ED GEIN – “Judas Goats and Dieseleaters” (Syracuse, New York) - Experimental/ Metalcore
Named after Wisconsin’s most notorious serial killer, this band plays a strange and unique gathering of styles: thrash, punk, sludge, grind, you name it – it all gets thrown into a blender here, blurring any true specific genres, other than “experimental” and “metal”. Hence, there are several greatly varied approaches at play here, all of which are examined quite successfully. The musicianship is top-notch, as are the songs and playing, and their intrepid sense of adventure in the studio pushes everything over the edge. The band seem to have no regard for any sort of rules of engagement musically, and no sense of compunction for the listener. Truly, anything goes, because it’s all about attitude and sound. And both are extreme here to the point where they usually, as a trio, sound like a sextet at minimum.

|
PSYOPUS Our Puzzling Encounters Considered (Oklahoma City, Ok.) Grind /Metalcore
Although intensely masterful playing is a prerequisite of the Technical Metal school, none can match the chops and audacity of PsyOpus, especially as performed on this new album, Their music is spastic and unpredictable, made all the more insane by guitarist Chris ArpÕs ability to play perfectly locked-up parts at lightning fast speeds by means of overdubbing as everyone else holds on for dear life in good approximation. These guys FLY through their tunes, and can fit more notes into a 32 sec. song (ÒPlay Some SkynyrdÓ) than any sane band would attribute to a full album. Their material, which flitters and flutters like a hive of angry bees is propelled by some finely crafted drumming and slithering, disturbed shrieking until the composition declares itself ÒfinishedÓ, at which point the band aptly stops on a dime. The precision is truthfully impressive and outstanding, always to the point of astonishment. This disk is a real ac hievement of technique; and the few instances where it is lacking in artisanship are more than made up for by sheer ability.
|
|
GAZA - "East” (2004) E.P. (Salt Lake City, Utah) - Hardcore/Grind
This is Gaza's first attempt at their disturbed and radical sound. It lays the groundwork for where they would later go with their classic disk, I Don't Care Where I go When I Die. But from the get-go we can hear that Gaza is intent to adamantly break almost every rule it sets for itself as soon as it is established. The title song is a truly bizarre study in dichotomy, where a single shrieking voice is pitted against built-up and multi-tracked ethereal harmonies layered atop a harshly compressed hardcore setting. It's one of the eeriest moments (and greatest) in the history of grind. This is followed by a gorgeous hammer-on guitar duet as a means of repose before the next onslaught. The drums throughout are ruthless and exhausting, the guitars searing and, of course, the vocals over-the-top. This and ÒI DonÕt Care Where I Go When I Die certainly go a long way in an attempt to separate the men from the boys.
|
|
SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY – “Parasite” (Frankinglansenmuth, Michigan) - Grind Metal
Yow, is this ever brutal ! (and I mean that in the best of ways). Peering beyond the shrieking vocals reveals some of the greatest guitar work in Extreme Metal, and some of the best written songs, too. Here is a case where shredding is not only acceptable, but intrinsic to the nature of the compositions; it eschews the former hardcore notion to eschew virtuosity, making the playing on this disk extremely cutting edge in technical terms. Truth be told, the band started out as a joke, playing a parody of Grindcore, to hyperbolical extremes, simply for fun and amusement. (See that their name is a twisted abbreviation of a vile term for the female anatomy). Quickly though, they realized that they had lifted the bar on what was becoming veritable, and began to take things seriously. The fruit of their labors then is this, their debut – and there’s nothing else like it to date. It’s quite over the top, and perhaps an acquired taste. But for those who can follow, it serves as both a high water mark and a glimpse of where extreme metal can go as a whole in the near future.
|
|
CROWPATH– “Son of Sulpher” (Umea, Sweden) - Mathcore
Crowpath is arguably the best and most far-reaching grind band in Europe. This is their second official album, and goes a long way to solidify the groupÕs reputation as the kings of boisterous, noise-driven, math-tinged madness. When they do manage to calm down a bit, they enter some sludge-rock territory, but offer it up in such a bizarre manner Ð and with such derring do Ð that the grind somehow holds sway. Some terribly strange & eerie slide guitar work (cleverly mixed with Hammond organ !) and an uncannily tuned snare drum (think old-school Brutal Death sound, but with fire alarm bell instead of ride cymbal) leave a lot of frequency room for all of the insanity to roam about unfettered in the mix. Everything is presented in crystal clarity, which is a scary enough thought in itself; But add to that some of the most whacked compositional frameworks imaginable, and youÕve got what I consider to be the penultimate Grindcore classic.
|
|
ED GEIN – “It’s A Shame A Family Can Be Torn Apart By Something As Simple As A Pack Of Wild Dogs” (2003) E.P. (Syracuse, New York) - Experimental/ Metalcore
This is a bit thrashier and singularly focused than “Judas Goats & Dieseleaters”, but no less intense. Whereas their later album is artistically all over the map, this EP sticks a bit more to the band’s hardcore roots, as attention to skill plays a bigger role here than the endeavors of artisanship. Nonetheless, this 1st record was not exactly a product of humble beginnings: The germination of their lyrically crude, political thought came of age on songs like, “The Marlboro Man Is A Douche Bag” and “A Way To Kill Old People”. Later their lyrics would openly challenge white supremacy, George W. Bush, the Catholic Church, etc, showing a nice progression from simply denigrating cigarette smokers and aimless complacency. This is a band that refuses to stand still, and won’t allow the listener any such luxury, either.
|
|
PSYOPUS “Ideas Of Reference” (2006) (Rochester, New York) - Technical Metal
This is the first album by the same sick mob that would bring you “Our Puzzling Encounters Considered” a year later. Really, this is the most learned group in Rock Music today, and the proof is in their many crossover references and pokes at both Jazz and Classical music. The last 2 minutes of the track “The White Light” are just insane, and it gets more ludicrous from there. As is usual, the majority of attention goes to the unorthodox guitar work of Christopher Arp, who is personally amassing legions of minions for his innovations as well as his fret-board speed. His guitar hockets back and forth between the speakers, and the space between is filled by the rest of the group, each a madman of technique in his own right. (One gets the impression that no-one in this band had a life of any kind before they began to play together). But once the listener becomes fully acclimated to all of the vivacious shenanigans, the true intent and excellence of the group begins to unfold, and there is a lot more going on than just speed compositions.
|
|
DESPISED ICON – “The Ills Of Modern Man” (2007) (Montreal, Quebec) - Deathcore
This is probably the most “normal” of the lot, with easily discernable nods to popular Death Metal: growls, pig squeals, bree’s and inhales courtesy of vocalist Alex Erian, and some simply awe-inspiring blast beat drumming by Alex Pelletier. The guitar work shines, the compositions are extremely great and the production is clean and powerful. But where this disk really makes its mark is in the group’s ability to expand upon the language of modern Metal whilst adhering to certain “rules” of the genre in an attempt to fuse many disparate elements with respect. The music on this disk seems to bluntly ignore the fact that it’s only mildly ground-breaking by going out of its way to be heartily earth-shattering (few players in the field have chops this audacious and admirable). All things considered, the outcome is one of the very hottest Deathcore albums ever made, despite the fact that the band need barely break a swea t to play this well.
|
|
DESTROYER DESTROYER “Littered With Arrows” (2007) (Umea, Sweden) - Mathcore
This is a HIGHLY energetic band, whose compositions are astoundingly complex. But they differ from say, PsyOpus, in that instead of being offered in a heady, learned way, these guys crunch away at the brain relentlessly with a down-and-dirty flavor. Rhythms are constantly shifting throughout, slithering around in the listener’s cortex like eels, daring one to hold on for dear life whilst trying to keep up with them. Special kudos go to bassist Dallas Niles, as his Goliath presence acts like an anchor, holding the band’s completely bizarre framework in place: often the drums are semi free-form, entering and exiting the patterns precisely and at will, and the guitars offer filigrees and unexpected attacks within the measures and counts. And the screeching vocals are amongst the most successful and un-nerving ever in this school of music. Three songs from this disk are remakes from their debut (which is difficult to find now, but also excellent); However, the versions here sound more immediate, brutal and confounding. Along with old hands Crowpath and relative newcomers Gaza, Destroyer Destroyer are at the vanguard of Metal’s new, mind-f#*ck approach, but they are more complex than the former, and even more intense than the latter. Personally, I expect this will be the best Metal release of 2007.

| SUN RA: "Disco 3000" dbl. disk w/ bonus material The album's one of Ra's greatest from the 70s -- recorded in Italy in 1978, and featuring some incredibly otherworldly keyboards that are some of his most enigmatic on record! This hugely expanded version features a whopping 12 tracks in all -- the complete performance that originally spawned the album, all of which is as delightful as the 3 tracks that were originally issued on vinyl. Finding all this extra Ra material from the 70s -- over 2 hours of music -- is like finding a time machine -- and the well-done package comes with great notes and excellent sound. Original tracks from the album include "Disco 3000", an incredible workout on synthesizer, with a tiny bit of drum machine, a little "Space Is The Place" breakdown, and all of the wild sound you'd expect from a Sun Ra album -- plus more long tracks -- the sweetly soulful "Friendly Galaxy", a great soul jazz number, and "Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens", which has spooky organ, frenetic bass, and somber percussion! Additiona l material includes Echoes Of The World", "Sun Of The Cosmos", "Geminology", "Sky Blues", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Spontaneous Simplicity" -- all played by a group that includes John Gilmore on tenor, Luqman Ali on drums, Michael Ray on trumpet, June Tyson on vocals, and Sun Ra on piano, organ, moog, and rhythm machine. |

THE NECKS: "Townsville" For over two decades the Necks have been stepping onto stages with absolutely nothing in mind, waiting for the first sound to happen and then following it through – with glacial inevitability, and never any sudden shift of gear - or introduction of new material – for an hour or so. Never mechanical minimalism - since each moment is invested with an intense presence – this is more a dense liquefaction of time; a form unique to the Necks; no-one else has even tried to do it. It’s a musical form the band evolved over more than 20 years of performing, and no two concerts ever the same. Though many of their pieces open with - or eventually arrive at - some discernable groove, Townsville just floats in a state of suspension from beginning to end. It’s like watching the ocean as wave follows wave: each the same; each different - assymetric. Bassist Lloyd Swanton who, on this occasion, provided the motif that set Townsville in motion had no idea where it would lead: ‘One of the deep joys for me’ he said, ‘after twenty years of making music with this group, is that we’re still completely unable to predict where our pieces will go.’ It‘s a paradox that makes the band addictive and keeps its music fresh: while there’s an apparent inevitability that should shut the music down, somehow it seems always to remain open; it’s never clear exactly how it’s going to unfold. |
| BIOTA: "Half a True Day" Six years in the making, this is the sixth CD released by ReR from the visual/sonic art group Biota. Unique in their history and method, Biota painstakingly construct complex, organic structures that mix extensive studio processing and musique concréte techniques, with a highly eclectic orchestra of acoustic and electronic resources - from kit drums, through mediaeval winds, strings and barrel organs, to early experimental electronic instruments. Their works are always performance driven and interleaved with successive stages of lamination, imbrication of parts, and radical pre- and post-processing. The interaction of staggered, overlapping elements reveals a changeable truth about the whole as the parts variously harmonize or dissent; reinforce or cloak one another in their unfolding. The project is, at heart, about uncertainty. Players encounter the shifting interplay between previously recorded parts juxtaposed with instrumental snippets - out of context – introduced from the group’s archives. Electronic processing programs are employed to apply semi-random and semi-intentional alterations to the proceedings. |
| STEVE MACLEAN: "Bridges" Steve MacLean began playing drums and guitar at the age of seven and composing at twelve. Completing high school early, he met Roswell Rudd and began playing concerts with him in New York. He moved to the city and took a job in a busy recording studio, working with cutting edge artists of every genre and spending his free time moving around the NYC “downtown” free improvisation scene. He soon joined Nick Didkovsky’s Dr. Nerve and made a slew of records. By 1980 he was scoring for dance, performing his own compositions on PBS television’s New Music Directions series, and setting up his own studio, which over the next two decades produced award winning scores and sound design for hundreds of TV and radio commercials, films and disparate multi-media projects. Between times he co-founded the Portland Experimental Music Collective, established his own permanent ensemble and had compositions performed at numerous festivals. He moved to Boston in 2000 to take up a professorship in t he Synthesis and Ensemble Departments at Berklee College of Music. He continues regularly to perform composed and improvised music - alone, with a student ensemble and in numerous projects with Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Nick Didkovsky, Ken Field, Chris Cutler, Jonathan LaMaster, Eric Rosenthal, and others. |
| FAUST: "Disconnected" Faust was among the most adventurous and creative German bands of the 70s, and after disappearing for a decade and a half, they reunited in the 90s and made several startlingly good albums. Today, drummer Werner 'Zappi' Diermaier and bassist Jean-Hervé Peron are the only original members, joined by Amaury Cambuzat from the band Ulan Bator. Nurse With Wound, formed three decades ago, is the brainchild of Steven Stapleton, now augmented with Colin Potter; NWW recordings are notoriously varied, often sprawling, haunting, and strange, with a love of musique concrète and disquieting sounds. |
