Topic: SUPERTRAMP Posted: March 01 2006 at 13:20 |
Breakfast in America is the one I think of as a perfect synthesis of high musical ambition and commercial approach... it's quite a lot of fun to listen to.
Nonetheless, I like 'em all up to "Brother where you bound", afterwards they always were in danger to lose tension ( though I like Rick Davis' stuff a lot and found that "Free as a bird" isn't half as bad as I thought at my first listen ! ).
I find it strange that Roger Hodgson, too, made only one album that really satisfied me after the split... his first... so it was as he said during that last concert in Munich: "From now on there'll be TWO Supertramp, one as good as the other"...

Paris is the album that made me start listening to prog music and I often listen to it again. I'm very sentimental...

How many of you have actually heard Supertramp's first album?
Based on votes, it seems the answer would be one and me. IMO it
is the the most proggie of them all. I suggest that if you have
not heard it, and are lucky enough to find it, you give it a listen.
It's totally different than anything they did after that.
Aloha Progheads!

Dangerous which i happen to be listening to at the moment.

Crime Of The Century.
All through high school I had a cassette with Crime Of The Century on one side, and Dark Side Of The Moon on the other. Lethal. Just when you were done with one, you were ready for the other - it never stopped![](smileys/smiley5.gif)

Just a sidenote, somebody should send in some more Supertramp mp3s. There's only one available on their page and it's a piano ballad, not very representative of their sound. Anyway, back to the topic...![](smileys/smiley17.gif) |
I'll try sending some now ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Wow, if only every poll was this easy ... Crime Of The Century is surely Supertramp's masterpiece

At first I liked Even in the quietest moments more, but now it is really crime of the century, especially the last two songs.

Breakfast in America
Although I don't have Crime yet, which everyone seems to think is their best album.

Crime of the Century. Breakfast in America is poppier but also good. Crisis is an often overlooked gem.

But what about "Endelibly Stamped",their second album? It was left out of the poll so Cluster seems unaware of it's existance. It's not as good as "Crime...." obviously, but better than the first one with some very proggy moments,as well as some rather weird ones. They hadn't settled on a direction yet so it sounds very fragmented, they even went for a Zeppelin/Purple type of heavy rock on a track called "Potter",Supertramp the hard rock band, good thing they decided against going in that direction! But it has some gems, especially "Rosie Had Everything Planned" a beautiful ballad with lyrics so surreal the band didn't even know what it was about! There's a very long, very proggy track called "Aries" which is mostly improvised, very uncharacteristic for Supertramp who were very meticulous about everything they recorded. On "Aries" they loosen their collars and just jam, which sounds selfindulgent on paper, but the result is pretty good. Well worth getting if you're a Supertramp fan.![](smileys/smiley1.gif) |
Nah I know about it, but don't own it. I didn't put down ALL their albums, just what I thought would be popular, that's why I included an 'Other' selection![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

I didn't notice the "other" section until I had sent off the reply.![](smileys/smiley9.gif)
