Topic: Do you have an open mind for music? Posted: June 20 2008 at 16:36 |
Interesting. I wonder what effect that there might be on this calculation, if the Progressive Tag was expanded to incorporate all of the sub-genres that we have here as additional categories, instead of all as one category.
Also, I am curious to see how it would calculate if all of my albums were included in the calculation, instead of only what I have listened to in the last 8 months. Much larger selection. Although, admittedly this probably isn't too bad given that I rarely listen to blues, classical or jazz, and never listen to many other categories like country, electronica, rap, dance, etc...

It's one of those mad Norwegian bands led by our man Hrolf Haggis, that's why it's so good.
Anyhow, back on topic we go!

Public Domain's 1972 album "Commercial" was very good, actually David.

it may not be fair but it's true-- in reality if one is to claim universal open-mindedness, one must indeed strive to hear everything from Public Domain commercial to Croatian folk music.. further, musical influence may come as much from remote sources as from well-known ones. Just being anal..

Open-minded doesn't mean you do listen to everything, it means you give everything a fair shot. It's not fair to say someone isn't open-minded because nobody has both the time and the money to truly listen to absolutely everything.

The second one down in the list, something Light.
Well it's the same as the last one I posted... yet I've played stuff since then, I guess it hasn't been finalised yet. I think last.fm do that on Sundays.
Well I like a lot of different genres. It's a bit inaccurate though, Aaron, as it doesn't indicate Zeuhl as a genre (it's probably under the 30% Other).

OMI updates a month after you generate your chart.
EDIT: so yours updated last/was created May 01, 2008, so it will next update June 1.

Here's the updated version (it hasn't changed all that much though):
It's not all that accurate imo, but I suppose it gives some insight to my listening habits. I seriously need to listen to more prog though, this is getting out of hand.

I think I have an open mind for music and listen to some really different bands and artist. The only thing I simply cannot understand is why it is mostly tagged "progressive rock" and "metal".
It is funny to see how people have an open-mind index of 1XX with tags like "black metal" "death metal" "thrash metal" and so on, as "rap" "hip-hop" "american hip hop" "deutschrap"..
Let's face it: 40% progressive rock means 5% symhponic prog, 2% progressive electronic, 3% prog folk, 4% eclectic etc.

I have no need for a last.fm diagram. Simply put I like good music, and have an open-mind for the same. What's left of my mind, anyway. Or at least that's how I explain my opinion of Nickelback and Krautrock

Absurd.

This is an interesting point which I have often thought about. The more genres someone listens to the more likely some people could assume that the person has an "undefined" taste. Of course this is wrong ... it might be undefined, it might be carefully chosen, there's no way to tell just from the list of genres.

I've always believed the scientific finding that the wider a person musical tastes are, the more intelligent they are. I wasn't sure about this being true, until I tried it on my own self. They match !

I think there's some kind of add-on that enables tracking what you listen to in your I-Pod. But I don't know...
