I used to live in Northern California, I really miss the outdoor alternative resorts with the hot springs and saunas etc.

A few years ago I paid a few therapeutic visits to a criogenic chamber. The first time I entered one, I felt my whole body scream in horror at the temperature (it was -120 degrees Celsius, as far as I remember, and you're only allowed to cover your feet and other sensitive bits). After less than a minute I had trouble breathing so I got out. However, the next visits were quite pleasant, actually, the initial shock wore off and I had no trouble holding out for the two minutes or so required of me.
So I guess I could get used to a sauna as well - however, I despise heat, and would take a criogenic chamber over a sauna any day.

As for me, I first experienced a sauna when I was about five weeks old - or so I'm told - so I guess you could say that appreciation for such things runs in the blood.
I still use our sauna on a weekly basis. Needless to say, I like it. |
You do run naked through the snow after you get out of the sauna, don't you?
|
I did go to bathe in a snow-covered stream once, and in summer I went swimming in a lake. However, on both occasions I was in the country, away from prying eyes... When you live in an apartment block, running outside naked is probably to be avoided.
|
Indeed. I'm not sure our neighbours would appreciate the stunt. However, like any self-respecting Finn, I have tried it once or twice... Luckily, it was away in the countryside with only family around, so no one was traumatized.

Yes, me too. I definitely understand why it's not very popular in countries that are characterized by mild/warm temperatures throughout the year. During the excrutiatingly long winter (the kind we often see in Finland), however, it does come in handy.

You're not supposed to go there with your clothes on, you know.

I don't know about you Finns taking credit for inventing it, though -- it would seem to me to be an ancient, pre-historic thing, and the native Americans did have their "sweat lodge.' (I imagine its origins go back to the nomadic peoples of the last ice age.)
Certainly the word itself is Finnish, though -- and pronounced "SOW-na," not "saw-na."
Where's a sweaty emoticon when I need one?

I love it! I don't go often to a sauna, though. I prefer a private sauna, because...
Well, erm...
No, seriously, I love it. Refreshing, a great way to relax.

I don't mind going to the sauna if it's not too hot, but I don't really care for it.
