For bass I would have recommended a Hughes & Kettner Basskick 100 (or a 200/300).

On guitar amps, I'm no big expert, but my bass teacher (a guitar and bass player himself) uses amongst others a great sounding Hughes & Kettner Duo Tone Head (nice big tubes).

And if only I could get my hands on Micky's Rick - he'd never see it again - hahahaha Wink

You have a 4001?!?!?!

I want a Ric bass sooooooooo badly....

Oh, yes, and I last heard him play it about half an hour ago... He was jamming to the background of Black Sabbath's debut album, and then to some Yes. I can assure you that not only did he play very well, but he looked hot as hell too (even with a bad head cold)!WinkLOLHeart

A Fender amp will have a great clean channel but the dirty side is ususally a disappointment, however since you're going to be using a distorsion pedal that shouldn't matter.

^ Some Marshalls will always sound quite dirty even with the clean setting.

My usual advice would be to not use a complete amp at all but to go for an amp simulation ... gives you much more flexibility.  With the Vox Tonelab SE (or the Line6 Pod XT) you not only get the sounds you want, you also have them at your "foot tips" ... especially in a live situation it's nice to only have *one* floor pedal.
