I am American by birth and came to Germany in 1993 on a job, met Friede a year later, and the rest is history. I really like it here; Cologne is a wonderful city. the only other European country I would like to live in is Italy, but only during my holidays please; I couldn't stand the Italian chaos for longer than a few weeks. we went to Firenze on our honeymoon; that's one incredible city. you have to see it to believe it; you are literally being blinded by art. have a look at the explanation of the so-called Stendhal syndrome at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stendhal_syndrome

I found loads of historic sites and cool architecture in Europe, but for the most part I really feel when I am in Europe that most of Western culture has become incredibly homogenized. The number of people in the countries I've been to that act pound for pound like Americans is astonishing.

I think Ireland would suit me. Beautiful, kinda rainy, healthy, happy, peaceful.

Hard to vote. My wife and I just returned from Europe. I loved Bavaria for the best beer in the world (hurray for the Bavarian purity law!). Switzerland for the mountains and glaciers. But I voted for Austria since it had a pleasant blend of both of the latter qualities, plus in Innsbruck there was an uncountable number of raving foxes riding bicycles in summer dresses. If there was an ugly woman in Austria, I didn't see her. It was kind of painful for a married man.
On the flipside, England was my least favorite countries as it had Ø of the above qualities.
And....Europeans in general smoke too much.

My German collegues always insisted on taking me to Italian restaurrants when I visited them, (even though I always wanted to try authentic German food), and when the company is paying price isn't usually an issue .

My experience with Italian restaurants in Germany is that they all serve something different from pasta and pizza too, only it is usually double as expensive. When I lived in Dortmund there was an Italian restaurant I went to once a month and really dined exquisitely. The bill was always about 100 DM then (it was before the Euro), and I always took three courses, an appetizer, the main course and a dessert.. Had I just eaten a pizza or a pasta with a glass of wine I could have settled for 20 DM. Edited by BaldFriede - August 06 2007 at 15:03 |

UK / England, I guess (though I've never been to Europe).
I am of English descent, and have always been a fan (and long a student) of English culture, music, history and literature.
Also, I have some very good friends there -- and my fave people here, overall, tend to be the Limeys, due mainly to a prevailing good sense of humour, wit, and perhaps a more informed, balanced, less navel-gazing worldview than I tend to see from my dear American cousins. (Plus the Brits are usually better spellers than the Yanks!)
(There are great people from all over, here on PA, though -- America is no exception.)
Ireland would have to be a close second -- the culture of my native island has been hugely shaped by that of Ireland and its people.
I'd like to see Germany some day, too, especially beautiful Bavaria. Beer is good.... Edited by Peter - August 06 2007 at 10:27 |

Although being European there are far too many countries in Europe I haven't seen yet, but wherever I went there was something likeable you wouldn't find in other countries (people, food, drinks, landscape, culture...). Still - since this is a poll - I had to vote (no, really didn't have to but wanted to) and the winner is UK (especially the southwestern parts of England). I'm deeply in love with Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

A few years ago I would have voted Finland without any hesitation. Now, unfortunately, due to a series of very sad circumstances, my relationship with that country (where I lived for almost 6 years) has been damaged beyond repair - so I voted for the UK, which is by far the country I know best after Italy and Finland.
I didn't vote for my own native country, Italy (for those who don't know), because I don't love it as much as I would like to. I love the food, the scenery, the history, the art... but certainly not the place it has become lately, nor the majority of the people. Very sad, but true (and I'll spare you the reasons). |

Definitely not Spain; I like UK (haven't been there), Italy, France, Switzerland (have been there), the nordic countries; but my favorite for many many reasons is Germany... for personal reasons, for educational reasons, and after visiting it 10 years ago, that opinion was confirmed....
Deutschland !!
