I'd say I'm quite OK. I'm primarily a guitarist, but I love getting the opportunity to go nuts with the sticks every once in a while. My friends say I'm pretty good, but I guess that's I just have a somewhat capable sense of rhythm, and most of them wouldn't be able to play anything more difficult than the simplest 4/4 beats.

I once watched an instructional video on how to play a snare...and I've messed around on a friends drum set. Nothin special. It's fun though to pretend to be good at double bass.

Maybe you can start a band of the jazz/fusion metal genre. . I would be very inclined to hear that, sounds like something i might enjoy.

voted one year. I've jammed on a kit but too infrequent to call it practising. so more recently I got an octopad thing and experimented with the sticks a little. I understand that it's not complete practise without worrying about pedals and distance between cymbals and things, but I don't see why electronic multipads can't be performance instruments in and of themselves. =)

Been playing for more than 10 years now. I can safely say that I fit your alternative number 9. I usually play jazz and metal, thus my influences are:
Vinnie Colaiuta
Jeff Porcaro
Simon Philips
Dennis Chambers
Neil Peart
Mike Portnoy
Terry Bozzio
Brann Dailor
Most (If not all) of my friends are quite pleased with my style, creativity and technique, though I still have to improve on many, many points. I do enjoy drumming very much.

I just listen to and play a lot of Hella, Lightning Bolt, and Don Cab.
I normally play noise rock....or atleast recently.
I like to take a lot of my ideas from Zach Hill and Damon Che. |

That was very nice jazz drumming. Im suprised that you've only played jazz for a year, it sure doesn't sound that way. Im curious as to what you get your motivation for those fills from, though maybe you don't normally play like that since you say you've only done jazz for a year. You should put a video up on your youtube of you playing what you normally do, maybe progressive rock? Just a guess.

The sound isn't great on the clip, but from what I can make out, you have the makings of a really good drummer. Keep it up. |

I have been playing drums for almost 25 years now. And Peart is definitely not my idol. My style of drumming was mostly influenced by the late Pierre Moerlen.

If you feel that the way the poll is rated is unfair for your particular situation, go ahead and say so. Most of you have . If you've played for 3 years, but you believe your as good as any 8 or something year player, i suppose go ahead and vote yourself for that category. Im not trying to be too strict on the level of skill, you know where you stand.

I think I have potential, but I don't have the time. I was OK in high school, and haven't sat behind a kit in over a decade. I'd love to pick it up again, though, believe me.

For the un-trained ear, I'm a master....
For the trained ear, I lack some rudiments...I make up for it with creativity....
I would do a much better work than Mick Pointer in Arena, for sure...
But if you want me to play difficult jazz, I may be a sorry sight...

My friends think I'm quite good, but then again they listen to Indie music and are easily pleased.
About six months ago, I sat behind a kit for the first time in years. I wasn't as bad as I thought I would be. I could still pull off some reasonable beats and play in odd time signatures, but I was speeding up and slowing down all over the place. I tried playing with a click and found it virtually impossible to stay in time. I'd love to take it up again and practice regularly, but that's not possible in my flat. My neighbours would form a mob and burn my house down.. |
