Well, if you're not using line out, then the recording has less to do with what mic you use, and more to do with your amp. Does this keyboard have built in speakers or do you drive it through an amp?
In any case, the Shure SM57 is a pretty good workhorse mic. It's ideal for micing instrument amps like guitar and keyboard cabs on a budget, but if you're only playing through built-in speakers, it probably won't sound that great anyway. |

Get a Line 6 Toneport UX2
Should come in around or under the $200 mark:
I use it for recording keyboards (and guitars and vocals...), and it's perfect for what I need it to do - you can even pile on additional effects and model the environment to virtualise where the mic is in relation to the cab.
You don't need a mixer unless you really need to record more than one instrument at a time, and it comes with qudio sequencing software - the very capable Ableton Live.
While you can't really go wrong with an SM-57, direct is always better, if you want to avoid ambient noise (sometimes you don't!).

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Oh yeah, it says also "output" ... and I have to buy a mixer or software. When I went to guitar center, it was stuff above $200+ USD, but I hope something economic as this would do the trick:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/Behringer-Xenyx-502-Mixer?full_sku=103846200 Ever heard of that one? Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. As a reminder, I just wanted you to let you know I'm not a serious musicians and while I'm now in a band, I'll still record in another house, meaning I would only use this stuff to add layers on a recorded song and casual solo songs. |

I think that you may have to go through the phones/line in socket |

The only in-out I have is "midi" ... and I read through the manual. |

What keyboard do you have? All of my keyboards have line in/out (2 sets in some cases) and midi in/out/thru.

Why not simply use the line outputs of the keyboard?

I record music every now and then as a casual hobby, but now that I'm progressive and I got in a band, I would have to buy a decent mic.
Is the highly acclaimed and well-known Shure SM57 good for keyboards? |
