Man, I envy you- college was the best time of my life.

I went to college without a real idea of what to study, a kid with a lot of interests. I think that I secretly believed I was going to be a rock star anyway, so my major didn't matter.

I started off at a Franciscan university, with a vague Communications major. I transferred after a year to a college that offered a Music & Sound Recording program, and spent two years discovering that I wasn't all that good at it. The coursework was no problem, but my attitude just wasn't where it needed to be. I was a serious party guy at that point, and it took a semester on probation to get my priorities back on track. However, I don't really regret it- if you're gonna party hard, the first few years of college is the best time to do it.

Luckily, part of St. Bonaventure's requirements were that every Freshman had to take a semester of Philosophy and a semester of Theology...and that became my undergraduate and then my post-graduate field. LOL- it was completely useless from an employment point of view, but I'd also earned a secondary major in Audio/ Video Communications from my other courses, so that helped find work later on.

Honestly, college is like anything else- you get almost exactly what you put into it. If I was going to college now, I'd be a lot more focused and disciplined...but on the other hand, I had four or five great years of exploration, fun, relative irresponsibility and intense relationships. Either way you approach it, you'll have memories to last a lifetime.

My point, in my experience, U.S. colleges are not focused on helping you get a degree which will lend itself to helping you make a living when you get out. I have seen dozens of people acquire degrees that are not worth much of anything careerwise. Watch out for that trap! Find whatever resources are available on curriculums that land graduates jobs and take a hard look at it. You can always pursue other more personal interests on the side or work your way into other things while working. It is hard to pursue much of anything if you are unemployed and have college loans to boot.

Sorry for the preaching.

Hey no problem, don't be sorry, those are valid points and I thank you for them.

Thats the "dream", but I don't plan on limiting myself. I'm thinking that I would get an undergrad in some music tech field and then for grad school try to get into a really good business school. With a business degree I could do just about anything. Thats my strategy, but I go to a good prep school with an awesome college guidance department, so I have faith in them to help steer me in the right direction as well.

sounds cool Sweetnighter, If art/design wasnt my first love, I'd probably
trying to do something in the music industry as well.
But...as for me I went to school at Joe Kubert for Comic book illustration.
After that I went and got my degree in Graphic Design, for what now is
my profession for the past 3+ years. Hopefully I'll get a break into comics
one day.

Just met with my college guidance counselor for the first time at school today. So I'm getting excited about college! I'm planning on studying music technology and recording. My dream is to work for Moog or Korg building and designing synths . Its such a prog geek dream, I know.

So here's my question: where did you go to college, if you did? This is oriented more towards the Americans on the board, but I'll be happy to hear about what other colleges people went to. If you're my age, where do you plan on going?
