Hey Gdub - is it like a rite of passage for gay men to
go through the whole Judy Garland, showtunes,
Madonna, Kylie thing?
Seems like a lot of gay people buty into it the same
way white middle class teenagers buy into 'gangsta
rap' . You're obviously an exception but are you
indicative of gay musical diversity or are you the big
leper at the Kylie/Judy/Maddy fest?
As for my missus - she can't stand prog - she
accused me last week of rotating the car CD
changer to PFM's Per Un Amico on purpose
'hahahah, this music is always on when I get in the
car, you must really love it,' she said through gritted
teeth.
Fact was the rest of the cds were genesis,
proto-kaw, gentle giant, steve hillage and more PFM,
I just figured Per Un Amico was the least offensive
she will admit to liking Pink Floyd and tiny bits of Yes
but when I put on Relayer I thought she might throw
the contents of the cutlery drawer at me.
However, whilke she doesn't like prog, she generally
has excellent taste in music opting for Radiohead,
Massive Attack, Bjork and loves most of the other
electronica I like (Mum, Fourtet etc). And she's even
started to admit that Zeppelin are really good. (she
was a GNR nut as a kid)
Unfortunately, as she's Mexican she has a terrible
fascination for bad latin american music too and
even makes me listen to ancient mariachi songs.
Then again with all these weird latin and prog and
alternative influences swirling around maybe I could
get a job with The Mars Volta

My wife will tolerate Floyd occasionally. Likes Japan era Sylvian, but otherwise wont entertain prog or my other musical bent electronica.

Actually I have been dating someone for about a month now. His music tastes suck! Cher, Madonna, George Micheal, Culture Club, Broadway Musicals....you know...the typical gay music.....Needless to say....he hates my music as well.
P.S.....I am currently listening to Peel the Paint by Gentle Giant...I am sure he would run in terror if he heard this. We generally agree not to listen to music when together. He says my music has no pop sensibilities. How gay is that?

Does he look anything like this?

No marathon Bette Midler and Barry Manilow sessions? and you call yourself gay.

My girlfriend was already a self proclaimed Nerd/Geek so prog was just a natural progression fior her. As she said it was music that "I felt I had been missing all my life". We tend to like similar things with Kansas, Some ELP, All of Gabriel era Genesis, some newer stuff like The Flower Kings, Nima and Merge, and Proto-Kaw. Although her background comes from Jazz like Diana Krall and soundtracks, mine is more from hard rock and classical.
Lots still to explore with her and listen too.

Unfortunately, my wife doesn't like much of what I like in music whether I choose prog, hard rock, classical or even a spattering of metal. She likes pop, loves Elvis Presley (obviously a great artist but not my cup of tea) and has even been known to listen to country ---aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

My 'girlfriend' is married to me, so unfortunately she doesn't have a choice in the matter! Over the years she has grown to like it, or at least 'tolerate' it.

My ex-girlfriend absolutly hated most of the stuff I listen to. She came up
with statements like Genesis sounded "gay" and what not. Well least to
say shes gone. Now I'm with someone else who appreciates it alot more. I
have converted her

My girlfriend is a life long Rush fan - seen them more times than me
She also likes some Genesis, and some Marillion and is greatly amused by Frank Zappa. She cant stand Yes and ELP. Refuses to go near Camel or VDGG!!
She's more of a metalhead at heart, and likes Metallica, Ozzy and Marilyn Manson..
She's in the right ball park, I guess..

It's touch and go. My wife really got into IZZ after seeing them last year. Some prog, the melodic more song oriented stuff wil work for her. I put on "Knots" from GG and she nearly pissed herself laughing.
At least she'll give it a go, but still refers to all you people as my prog-nerd friends.

For her it is not so much a question of Prog as of Rhythm changes. She would like let's say, Horizons or another quiet peace but when it goes into 7/4 or similar stuff she first frowns and after 3 minutes she asks me to put on the headphones. Still we got a lot of Musical tastes in common but mostly in Jazz & Classics.

But Radiohead aren't prog, surely
My wife loves prog (it took a little education, but we got there), but although Topographic Oceans is one of her favorite prog albums, she cannot watch Jon Anderson after seeing the 90125 tour film..... he is now referred to in our house as "the mincing tart"
Sorry Jon....

I have a wife (although she loves it when I still call her my
girlfriend) who is very into music. She likes Talk, Talk, King
Crimson's Red, Nirvanna, Swell, The Cure ( ),
Air, Christophe (thats the re-invented French crooner from the
70's), Radiohead, etc. She likes the more avant garde stuff like the
Mars Volta but unfortunately, thinks that the rest of it (Genesis, Yes,
Dream Theatre, ELP, IQ, Flower Kings, etc) sounds too safe for her
tastes.
Naturally at this pont, I take some lighter fluid and set light to her wardrobe.

She's not a huge prog fan, but she has got into odd bits of it - Gryphon, Gong and Gentle Giant all get a thumbs up, though she's indifferent to Yes, Genesis, ELP and Tull.
She can't stand Magma and isn't too keen on King Crimson, but she's been with me to concerts by both, and Guapo. If any of you are familiar with Captain Beefheart's 'Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles' that song pretty much sums the situation up from where I'm sitting.

Yuk.
