Topic: Permanent Waves (Minus Natural Science) Posted: April 20 2007 at 12:19 |
As a brief aside, I remember an interview with Van Halen around the same time that RUsh was touring Permanent Waves. It seems that Eddie would play Different Strings as a way of making fun of Rush. Oh well, Eddie's a great guitarist & rehab denizen & an egomaniac. I'd party with VH, but would prefer having the guys in Rush as friends.

Firstly, Permanent Waves is one of my least favourite Rush albums.
I can't stand 'The Spirit Of Radio', and I'm not too keen on 'Entre Nous' or 'Natural Science' either!
However, the other three are all good songs. 'Freewill' is catchy, 'Jacob's Ladder' has a nice slow build up, and excellent guitar work from Alex, and then, we have the wonderful 'Different Strings'.
And that gets my vote. The most beautiful song Rush had written since 'Madrigal' off A Farewell To Kings. |
I am with you I am so tire of The spirit of radio I don't hate it.It just has been overplayed on the radio, which killed it. On the other hand Different Strings"is great song well played that I guess was never played on the radio, however, is too short and the I always feel disappointed of the editing of the solo at this end of it.

Well I wouldn't have voted for it even if it had been here. I voted for Entre Nous but the whole album is great, possibly my favourite Rush.

Ooh, difficult choice. Obviously I would have chosen Natural Science but it had to be excluded... So I would now choose either Freewill or Spirit of Radio... Probably Freewill though. Please don't ask why...

I admit this is one of the Rush albums I'm not used to listen to so often. Anyway, I've always liked Freewill.

Freewill I choose out of Freewill First I decided not to decide anything, but then I remembered that someone once told me that to take no decision is also taking a decision. I prefer Freewill also to Natural Science.

I assume he excluded Natural Science because he figured everyone would vote for it, if it were included, thus making the poll rather pointless.

OK, now there's two of us, I can just feel the Tidal Wave of curiosity coming as to the exclusion of Natural Science. P.S. what does "meh" stand for ?

The spirit of radio. The guitar intro is amazing and lovely. Hard to describe the joy, the big smile that appears on my face when I hear it after a long while.....

I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

The Spirit of Radio - for several reasons - guitar parts & tone, lyrics straight to the point about the "industry" by a band that had succeeded despite not following your standard business Record label advice, and finally, the flowering of Rush's ability to write concise impactful songs. Of all the 'overplayed" classic rock songs, this is one I still love. P.S. Question - Why the exclusion of Natural Science ? Is it because, in a way, it was the last Rush lengthy epic ...

Vote goes to Freewill. That blistering instrumental part towards the end of the song is off the charts, I can hardly choose which of the three to focus on.
