Progismylife:
pick up some Virus: Carheart (on Jester records) and Ved Buens Ende: written in waters. (Candlelight records has the reissue) they both share one guy: Carl Michael Eide, who is a master of several avant garde bands....Virus is sort of a meandering Avant garde post black metal band that is just amazing...and has chillingly awesome psuedo-jazz chords/arpeggios and very jazzy bass and drum parts.....cannot recommend these guys enough! Ved Buens Ende came before Virus and was/is one of the best avant garde black metal bands ever (with the exception of Dodheimsgard/DHG, which Eide is also involved in). Of course it helps if you like Black Metal, but take my word for it, this is FAR from typical low grade/low budget/necro crap.....do not be put off by the "black metal" tag, as the vocals are not typical....this is amazing stuff....highly recommended. also check out Rope (from Chicago)....refer to my Avant Jazz thread for their link and other recommendations in the avant arena.....I have just scratched the surface of avant garde myself, but I find it to be an amazing world within music that is just full of surprises and is really refreshing... Virus Myspace: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=37770328 from there you should be able to find not only Ved Buens Ende, but DHG, and a whole host of other weird bands in their Friends links.... |

the only Camel I own:
Mirage, a Live record (both very good and I want more.....) Rush: 2112, hemispheres, moving pictures, exit stage left, signals...(have not heard anything newer than the one with "roll the bones") Opeth: I am on the fence with these guys. I have been listening to them since '99, so I am no stranger to their sound- which has its limits....even if it is brilliant! But I think my favorite was their departure from their "usual" sound: Damnation. really I think a lot of them tend to blend together song for song and album for album and I really do not see it necessary to own them all. what other bands are you interested in from my list? ask away and I will try to be as concise and helpful as possible..... |

Unexpect?
OF COURSE! I saw them last year on of their few US shows and got to hang out with them at a bar into the wee hours of the morning, discussing all things Canadian and musical. Very cool people who put on an excellent show. Their disc was my #2 disc for last year. (right behind Martyr's "feeding the abscess" which just had to be #1)

Welcome!
If you like Mick Barr I take it you're already all over the Flying Luttenbachers?
If not, you'll want to get their recent album Cataclysm for certain. Based on what you've said it's going to be right up your alley.

Welcome!
Your username is very appropriate given the current discussion of songs about disasters in the non-music prog lounge. |
