well deep purple is a proto-prog band so is very close .btw he is a beginer guitar player so dont recoment somethig very complex .something like ''iron man'' or ''cocaine'' is easy to play and really fun .

Porcupine Tree's Shallow is pretty easy and fun to play. Most of Chain Sling by Pain Of Salvation is pretty easy too.

There are a few things that are proggy but simple enough;

'Hey You'   Floyd
'Dazed and Confused'   Zep
..and some riffs like 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' by Yes

I second that.  If someone else already plays a song let them play it.

Agreed, I've been playing for nearly a decade now (saying that really makes me feel older than I am) and to be honest I can't play any songs all the way through except Empty Spaces by Pink Floyd and Apache by The Shadows , mainly this is because I'm not very good technically and can't play fast enough for most rock solos and after a while I find blues gets too repetative.

Try "Lucky Man" by ELP, very simple chords (they must be if I can play it).
G D in the verse and Am Em in the chorus (I think).
Can't help you with the synth solo though.

I'm just starting on the guitar.  Whats a good (and easy) prog song try and play?   I'll set it as my goal.
