In Montreal? of Montreal? Idk...this bitch kid I knew went to see them in the city while I was seeing Porcupine Tree. We saw some kids talking about them on the train...they looked pathetic. So you could only figure....

Off the top of my head?
Favorites: Explosions in the Sky
Ozric Tentacles
Tangerine Dream
Least Favorites: Porcupine Tree
... Actually I think all band names are original, so I guess I don't really have any least favorites.

OK, be sure and but in "Cock and Ball Torture band" when you Google it, otherwise you'll get a bunch of pervy CBT sites and sites where you can buy devices for CBT. |
My ex used to go to CBT to help with her bipolar depression. She said it stood for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but now I'm not so sure...

A side recommendation for the adults on this site, the book Encyclopeida of Unusual Sexual Practices. Things that'll make you go "whaaaa?"

GOOD NAMES:
1. King Crimson WOW! How can just a band name be so cool?! King Crimson, the name, is just pure awesomeness.
2. Manowar It REALLY fits the band, because the music is so "manly" and the lyrics often deal with war. It also sounds good, and it's long enough.
3. Iron Maiden I like those band names with two words. Especially when the other is "Iron". And hey, the name comes from an ancient torture device. Now, how cool is THAT?!
I also like the name "Dream Theater", even though I don't like the band at all. Other cool names: Motörhead (couldn't fit the music any better), Hawkwind, Megadeth, Black Sabbath (spooky!!), Genesis.
BAD NAMES: I don't like: 1. ridiculously long OR short names (unfortunately Van Der Graaf Generator is also too long) 2. names, which are very common words in English, such as Yes (The Who is pretty dull as well) 3. names that include any numbers, marks, signs, symbols or anything like that. 4. extremely unoriginal names like Emerson, Lake & Palmer etc. In other words, names including people's names. 5. names like "THE *******S". Or even worse, names like "*insert a name here* and the ************s." Bill Haley and The Comets for example. 5. simply stupid names. Need an example? THE FLOWER KINGS!

Best band name - tie between Christian Death and Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Worst band name - On A Friday |
Actually it's from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band edit: I guess we're both right. The Beatles used the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song in one of their movies. And they changed. Radiohead is so much better than OAF.

Here's Chris Cutler laying out the theory behind a terrific name (Art Bears):
I took the name from a sentence in Jane Harrison's Art And Ritual. "Even today, when individualism is rampant, art bears traces of its collective, social origin..." but not too much should be read into this; it just sounds intriguing, has an animal in it, plays with ambiguity and is mildly ridiculous. |
Of the ones that've already been mentioned, Jethro Tull, Samlas Mammas Manna, Mothers of Invention (can't decide if the original, uncensored 'The Mothers' is better)... King Crimson... Not necessarily bad, but The Crazy World of Arthur Brown has a very perverse naivety to it. Furthermore, there's nothing like the loss of innocence experienced when you realise that, woah, 'Beatles' is actually a terrible pun!

I once saw an unknown band that were active in like 1 year, and their name was "Free Beer" ...to get people to see their gigs

Hmm, I guess Van der Graaf Generator is a quite cool name, it somehow fits with their music. Despite being wrongly spelled.
I also like Meshuggah. Both the sound of the name(goes with chug, chug, chug, chug feel of many of their riffs) and the meaning(according to band biographies, it is the yiddish and hebrew word for "crazy") fit with their music.
Can't really think of any names I really dislike...

Good:
Ozric Tentacles, Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, Yes, Opeth, Death, Naglfar, Burzum, Faust...
Bad:
Spock's Beard, Limbus 4, OOIOO, Mechanical Poet (took it from Majestic Mayhem's signature. Never heard of them)

Christian Death and Godspeed... are terrible names. On a Friday, while not especially notable, is certainly better.

I think Yes and Genesis are good band names.
What I don't really like is the X-factor, even if I enjoy some of the band which and with an X.
