saw Pierre Moerlen's Gong in the 80s, and they had a huge gong tree with somewhere between 20 and 30 gongs in it on stage. Pierre played on it for 2 tracks

Definitely!  There's nothing more beautiful sounding than a deep, resonant gong ageng (the largest gong in a gamelan orchestra).  I want to buy one and set it up in our kitchen, so dinnertime can be announced by that low, near-subsonic THRUMMMMMM....  Tongue

I'm a big fan of Stockhausen's works featuring amplified tam-tam and live electronics: Mikrophonie I, Kurzwellen, Prozession, etc.  If you like gongs, you need to hear these!

It's also really cool to hear gongs used as ride cymbals by drummers like Fredy Studer, Pierre Favre, Terry Bozzio, et al.

And, of course, GONG (the band) are among the greatest in the universe... RIP, Pierre, we miss you!

When I say Pierre Moerlen's Gong in the mid 80s as a teenager he played on a huge gong tree that had about 40 gongs in it.

Why is GONGS capitalized?  Are you talking about a group?  Anyway, since this is techy talk, "gongs" can really round out and complete even the smallest drum kit.  I used to have a 22" Zildjian gong behind me to get that Bonham or Palmer effect whenever I wanted / needed it.  I also use one inverted 16" china to get that crisp, thrash sound.  You know, Mosley uses it all the time on Marillion tunes, and Peart uses it (them?) to great effect as well.  So, if this is about using "gongs" with your trap set or as auxiliary percussion, I am all for it.  (But, if you're talking about a group, forget all I just rambled on about...)
