'Tales From Topographic Oceans' is a superb album, although I'll grant you it takes some getting used to/getting into.

The Flower Kings's 'Unfold The Future', whilst a little over-long is chock full of great ideas, well executed.

Never been a big fan of 'The Wall' - I've always seen it as the first Waters solo album; some good ideas, some good songs, but overall, I find it overblown (strangely, I think the live version 'Is There Anybody Out There' released a couple of years ago, actually works better than the studio album).

'The White Album' is excellent start to finish, apart from one (IMO) duff track... "number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine" .

One of my favorite relatively new double albums is Dream Theater's 'Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence'; good concept, good music & intelligent lyrics (any prog band who can get away with a 10 minute epic dealing with stem cell research are OK by me).

Mind you...

...I've always regretted that Pallas's 'The Sentinel' was never released as a double.

Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" and Jan Garbarlke's "Rites".

Edit: + many classical 2CD's!

Are there many classic 70's doubles (vinyl) which fit on 1 cd (76mins)?

Anyway...
'The Wall', 'Lamb....' and 'Physical Graffiti' get my vote.

Personally, this is one of the things that spoils many CD releases.  Having 40-45 minutes on 2 sides of vinyl was a real limitation.  And this meant that only the very best stuff made the cut. And the focus of an album was often very clear.

With 60, 70 or even more minutes available (and the expectation that you'll fill an entire hour at least) many bands resort to putting out tracks that would never have seen daylight on anything other than a special "rarities" album a couple of decades ago.

I know that many of you will think I'm blaspheming, but I'm firmly with Rick Wakeman in that I think Topographic oceans is over-long and stretched thinly to fill 4 sides of vinyl, or 2 CDs.

There are some great themes and ideas in there, I grant you.

But it should have been a single album.Shocked

Marillion - Marbles
Beatles - White
Genesis - Lamb

And, considering the commercial direction of later Genesis albums, I thought 'We Can't Dance' was a great double album (vinyl) with some great prog moments.

Mars Volta albums are tehnically double albums if  you compare the length of their albums compared to most album lengths in the 70s.

Except some of Third is recorded live (two separate gigs?) and cut and pasted into studio performances. I think one of those recent Cuneiform Records Soft Machine releases Noisette, can provide a fuller recording of one of the live sets.

I guess... what are your favourite 2 disc masterpeices of all time?

A few that come to mind for me are "The Lamb Lies down on Broadway", or "The Wall", or "Metropolis: Pt2"

The album you name DOES NOT have to be widely considered a classic masterpeice... it can be completely based on your opinion. So let's hear it guys! :D

Come on, Metropolis Pt 2 is a Single Album
