you guys thought I was tough. this is his first album to be reviewed!

JETHRO TULL — Aqualung
Review by jesus brea (Jesus Brea)

2 stars This might be a fan's favourite, but it doesn't seduce me as much as it used to. The main problem on this album is that to my ears this sounds a bit like Led Zeppelin with flute, there are no exciting jazzy bridges (not counting My God), no tempo nor time nor mood changes, just plain classic rock with flute; it's a heavy metal album.

My second motif is Ian's vocals: they're poisoneous and preachy, his singing sounds a bit too generic compared to his standards. He proved he could sing more maturely on A Passion Play and further albums (and that's just 2 years later). In this one he wants to sing heavily and raw, and it is quite a turnoff after a few tracks. The lyrics are somehow a bit better than those on Benefit, were they not for the ones in Wind Up: imminent and evident teenage anger.

Musicwise it's not better than Benefit, although My God manages to hold the candle, basically due to the lyrics and the middle seccion, embellished with the Russian-like chants, which is nothing like Jethro Tull had done before that.

I agree with another reviewer that the best songs on here are the short acoustic intervals, which show a better vocal delivery and sentiment. Mother Goose is another Tull classic with delightful flutes and vocal harmonies; and I already mentioned My God. Locommotive Breath begins with a great fusion between the baroque-like John Evan's piano and the entrance of Martin Barre's bluesy licks, but after a while it just doesn't do much for me; it's just another radio-friendly song.

Although it is a concept album, it's certainly not the progressive gem that everyone is practically chanting about. The real turning point for Jethro Tull's venture through progressive music would begin a year later. Here we witness the short-lived metal era of the band that would re-emerge in the late 80's. Seems that their vecinity with Led Zeppelin was indeed a bad influence, although they didn't rip the style entirely off.

Still do some reviews, Dallas, all of them would be too much to ask, but just the five star albums would be nice.

just for the reord, i generally agree with Dallas's ratings, though they sometimes may seem harsh. would love to see some reviews for some of the better known albums though, so it explains his taste better.

Geez,
Positive input, thanks tuxon, you are a brave man! Just trying to save the newbie $100's looking through the progressive dumpster and supply a little direction. I agree with your selections as it defines your knowledgable taste.

115? I don't think Tull made that many albums...better throw in Wish You Were Here.

I agree with richardh; unless you're a freshman proggie you should always try to select albums that appeal to you only-- that's part of the fun of prog, you're always an outsider. An independant thought/listening process is crucial for growth and real development of individual taste...and enough with the ridiculous lists-- really, it's too much, not particularly helpful and takes up huge amounts of space.

The fact that Pink Floyd get three albums in the list compared to only only one by ELP would make me disregard it entirely.DB also doesn't like Kayak or Eloy,2 European bands that I do like. For that reason I will never follow his recommendations. You should listen to music you like rather than what other people think you should like.

I am pretty sure that non-British and non-American artists made great albums as well.

Ok, I have no problems with ratings without reviews. I now know I can't really trust any of Dallasbryans reccomendations. (Except for late seventies, french electronic... maybe)

Negative result is also a result.

But that's the beauty of it - you are getting an idea whether you should get the album knowing taste of the person recommending it. Exactly what I need to make a decision. Therefore I prefer to make a list of reviewers whose recommendations I will probably follow, and the ones whose recommendations mean "red light" for me.

I have nothing against rating without reviews. From Dallasbryans ratings I know when to trust his recomendations (Progressive electronic), and when not to (all other subgenres). Especially if the 'rater' is fairly profilic, it can be very constructive and helpful. Just like someones list can be.

That list would be a lot more impressive if you had actually written a single review.  Ratings without reviews add nothing constructive to the site.
