Topic: Most Wanted Prog Supergroup Posted: October 11 2006 at 15:51 |
Guitar - Steve Hackett
Guitar - Ritchie Blackmore
Vocals - Euan Lowson (Pallas)
Bass - Chris Squire
Keys - Tony Banks
Drums - Cozy Powell
It would either sound like a train-wreck, or, just perhaps, Blackmore & Hackett would be trading classical & blues licks, Squire & Powell would have a groove going, Banks would be 'Tron-ing his heart out, and while that's all happening, Euan Lowson is "stabbing" himself & coughing up blood!!

Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) - Flute, Vocals, Lyrics
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Vocals, Electric +Acoustic Guitar
Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) - Electric Guitar
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) - Bass Guitar, Lyrics
Keith Emerson (ELP) - Keyboards
Carl Palmer (ELP) - Drums
Peter Sinfield (King Crimson) - lyrics
Also, and interesting idea, but it would be interesting to have a second drummer, in which case I choose Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. And of course, this whole lineup rests on the assumption that Waters lets Anderson and Sinfield write lyrics too.

In my very humble opinion, supergroups are never a very good idea, precisely because of the egos involved. Most human beings have much bigger egos than they believe, and artists of any kind develop even bigger ones because of the attention and flattery to which they are subjected.
BTW, if I were to choose one, I'd choose a supergroup that actually existed and lasted the space of a single album - that is, UK's first lineup, with John Wetton (bass/vocals), Eddie Jobson (keyboards/violin), Allan Holdsworth (guitar) and Bill Bruford (drums). How much better can you get?

The lineup of UK is OK, but the music was weak. | Weak?! ...interesting.

Good choices all around, but if I had to pick one, I wouldn't be too picky and just want Transatlantic back for one or two more albums.
Beyond that, I'd like to see the following made-
Tony Banks (Genesis) - Keyboards
Steve Howe (Yes) - Guitars
John Wetton (King Crimson) - Bass & Vocals
Neil Peart (Rush) - Drums & Percussion
-Marc.

I know what I like and I like what I know. I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will. If I die tomorrow, I`d be alright because I believe that after we`re gone, the spirit carries on.

My anchors would be: Drums, percussion - Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, solo; a Brit) Bass - Helmut Hattler (Kraan; Germany)
And the rest of the band would spotlight: Keyboards - Thijs van Leer (Focus; Dutch) Woodwinds and saxes - Didier Malherbe (Gong, solo; France) Violin - who else but Jean-Luc Ponty (Mothers, solo; France)
and feature: vocals - Demetrio Stratos (Area; where the heck was he from?? Greece? Cyprus? Hope I spelled his name correctly.)

Unnecessary with all the others here, but it was a struggle, since I would've loved to add Alan Holdsworth, Steve Hillage (Gong), or Jan Akkerman (Focus). Akkerman and Hillage had to be disqualified by my rules (no two from the same band), and I just don't think Holdsworth's style would fit with these others. But if I need a guest rhythm guitar for some tracks, we'll invite John Abercrombie (US) because I love his soft but forceful jazzy styles.
Fun question! Let there be peace.

Demetrio Stratos was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1945 - it's all that I know.

in the memory of the two great musicians who past away, lets imagine this instrumental jam:
Miles Davies
Hendrix
... (and some studio musicians).

Good calll on Hattler; he is one of the very best bass players in prog and undeservedly little known.

Drums/Bass: Christian Vander and Janik Top (Magma)
Guitar: Frank Zappa
Keys: Mike Ratledge
Sax: John Coltrane
I imagine this group playing some sort of cross between Free-Jazz and very tightly-composed stuff, and playing it loud enough to make you combust.

Petrucci lives. And owns all. I'm sorry, but he's half Joe Satriani, half Steve Morse, half freak of nature, and half excellent songwriter. Yes, that's four halves. No, that doesn't add up to one. It adds up to two. 'Truch is just that good.

Blackmore a roadie? Together with Petrucci? Man, that's pure blasphemy... And they wouldn't last half an hour together! I already can see Ritchie smashing his Strat on Petrucci's head...

I would pay so much money to see that. DEATH TO PETRUCCI!!!

This has been done so many times before.
I won't make up my own, I'm just gonna watch how the Akerfeldt, Wilson, Portnoy project goes. Although I don't like Portnoy or any of DT's stuff, I do agree that he has considerable chops. If only Martin Lopez was still healthy...
