Rockbox supports FLAC, and you can load it on Archos, iRiver, iAudio or iPod players.

They already exist?

COWAN make the iAUDIO X5 and iAUDIO U3 which both support the FLAC lossless format.

EDIT: And the new iAUDIO6 also supports FLAC.

^ no, not really. Some players are able to play one lossless format, but have other drawbacks.

I'd say that the time is not yet right for using lossless formats on mobile players. I currently simply rip my CDs in ~200kbps mp3 VBR and to be honest: On a mobile player there is very little difference to the original.

I recommend this player for you: Creative Zen Nano Plus

priced at $100 or much less depending on where you buy it, with 1GB.

If you choose another player, make sure it's compatible with Napster and Yahoo Unlimited even if you don't currently use these services ... you'll be using the player for several years, and supporting Windows PlaysForSure and the Janus library should be a minimum requirement for mp3 players.

Good choice, I know someone with the Creative zed and he says it is excellent

I've had my 20 GB iPod for almost a year now, and never had a problem. I love it. I hear there were some problems with a batch they had made by a different company, because Apple was overwhelmed. I think that problem has been taken care of. I was also skeptical at first, but I feel it was worth every penny.

I got the Samsung YP-U1Q - 2Gb so it holds around 20-30 CDs. Easy to load up - it has a USB connector which swings out of a bit in the back and you just plug it straight into your PC and copy files over.

Clap

Your intuition is correct.  they are in fact screwing everyone.  myself included.  I had one for a year and a half and it died 3 times.  As soon as I have spare cash I'm going with a 1 or 2 GB flash-based one from Creative.

I would like your advice on a good cheap MP3 player. I'm considering getting one so I can listen to music while I run, so I don't need something that holds more than an hour or so of music (longer would not be bad, however). I would prefer if it is non-iPod, because since they're so popular I can't help but get the feeling that everyone is getting collectively screwed.
