Topic: Soda or Pop? Posted: July 05 2006 at 16:05 |
I grew up in the Southern US & it was always COKE, regardless of what it actually was. My friends from up North called it Soda. I still call it Coke.

Perhaps I should have explained. Soda and Pop are the exact same thing, but people from different parts of the US (and, presumably, the UK) call it either soda or pop. This is the poll to decide which word is better. |
We don't really call it either.

It is indeed .
Many people in the SE say coke as a generic term for soda, although it doesn't make sense. Honestly, I'm not sure what I say, I don't even pay attention any more.

Here's the definitive answer.
It was originally soda pop, two words. If you think about it, soda is the adjective, and pop the noun. So, if you want to cut it down to one word, it has to be pop. Put it in a conversation. "I want a pop." "What kind of pop?" "Soda pop."

Here in Pennsylvania, it's pop. here's a conversation from my first day of college in Virginia: Me: Where's the pop machine around here? Roommate (from Virginia): the what? Me: the pop machine. Roommate: the what machine? Me: you know, pop.... err... soda? Roommate: Oh. down the hall. Me: Dammit!
