Topic: PRIMUS vocals = Mr. Skull??? Posted: June 29 2006 at 19:35 |
It's an age old debate that Claypool has often dispelled. He's just a
HUGE fan of the Residents and were a large musical influence on him and
Primus altogether. Primus have played Residents covers in the past
(which you should check out) and had Residents as guests at a Primus CD
release party. There's a torrent bootleg of it somewhere, in which the
Residents sing over Primus performing covers of Residents songs.

A couple times, in ANTIPOP... mmm ¿The Residents are prog related now?... I wasn't very sure about where to place this thread; ¿but The prot-prog/prog related?... I'll try to think it harder next time, admin. Sorry.

I think I have serious issues with my English... or perhaps with the logic behind the title of the thread... off course Les Claypol can't also be the singer of The Residents... he would be very very old if so... but the sound of the voice is almost an impersonation of Mr. Skull... I'm saying this after listening to a song wich I thought was Primus, but ended up being a Residents song from The Comercial Album... |
You probably don't know that the Residents are most likely to have a changing lineup ...

No, Claypool's father was a fisherman, and wasn't Homer Flynn.

The similarities are conscious ones, I'm sure. I see it as tribute more than rip-off.

Hello Skinny was on Primus' Frizzle Fry album. I really dont know and don't feel like looking it up, but I think I read somewhere that when Les was growing up he would "walk on glass" just to meet the residents.
I used to think Hello Skinny was a Primus song because the singers do sound pretty much the same.
Oh well, both bands are amazing.
So I guess listen to Hello Skinny if you don't hear the similarity.

Everyone knows that Homer Flynn is the singer.
Listen to him in interviews, it's pretty obvious

Yes Claypool is very inspired by the ancient Residents Vocal, but I don't think he was the singer of the legendary Residents.

Perhaps my basic english trainning is playing me... I'm trying to say "Les Claypol sings very much like Mr. Skull, except for those electronically distorted vocals that Mr. Skull uses sometimes."

The one with the Skull mask on The Residents... sometimes, he also uses the Eyeball mask, so I guess it is confuse... but let's say "The Residents Main Vocalist"...

Ah yes... Mr. Skull. Well I know Claypool is influenced by The Residents, so it doesn't really come off as a surprise that he somewhat adopted a style similar to Mr. Skull. From what I've heard by the Residents (Third Reich and Roll and Duck Stab) I don't really hear the similarities, though.
