I always wanted to try tool; as the only thing I knew about them is the few songs that I heard on corporate radio stations we have in the states. First I got Aenima; I thought the musical passages were good but the singers lyrics were a little self indulgent. Most of it seemed like he was whining about something, but overall I liked it. Recently I got 10000 days which I liked even better. Tool is definately inspired by K Crimson, and I thought the lyrics were more profound than on Aenima. Next I'm getting Laterus, can't wait.

With that said, we are in taste-country here, so my saying that "Sacerful.." "UMMAGUMMA", "Echoes" and "One Of These Days" from "Meddle" and "Pompeii" are their only quality-releases, is sort of the same as "They are the only ones with qualities that I enjoy". So there.

But sales DO equal status. I don't think The Wall is that great an album, but my point is that it'll be a long time before anything Tool releases will sell nearly as many copies, which is why they will never have the reputation of Floyd. I'm sorry, but in terms of general name-recognition, sales, and overall appeal YOU CAN'T BEAT DARKSIDE OF THE MOON. This was the point I was trying to make; I haven't actually heard much of Tool's work because prog-metal is too loud.

I don't think so, as I am a fan of all the bands listed, except Tool.

I love Sabbath, Zeppelin, Crimson, Rush...and Tool. I avoided their music for a long time. My younger brother of all people got me hooked on them (hence I only have CDR copies of the Tool albums - I'm still waiting to purchase the originals).

I remembered their video for "Sober", the stop-motion animated one from back in the early 90's on MTV. I also really liked A Pefect Circles "Judith" video, but never paid much attention to the music itself until my bro hooked me up with his Tool collection. I'd never been as impressed on a first listen like this since Black Sabbath Vol. 4! Clap

As a humorous aside, a girlfriend of mine told me she absolutely loved Maynard James Keenan because she found out that he likes to have anal sex with the ladies. Big smile Then I saw him play Satan in the 'Bikini Bandits' movie and I thought, wow...this guy is brilliant - just hilarious. LOL The behind the scenes party was great, as we see Maynard dressed as pimp dancing it up with porn star Joanna Angel. The man knows how to live! Wink

I highly doubt it. There is one key ingredient that Tool doesn't have, crossover appeal.

Tool have a greater percentage of good albums than Floyd, so why not?

Don't the members of Tool go off and be band sluts for other projects?

Band sluts...another topic I think I'll post on.

Back on track...if Tool remained intact CD after CD, they may have a larger collection of music, some of which is sure to suck. I think these guys would burn out if they wrote with the same frequency as PF. Not to mention, PF wrote a simpler kind of music, IMO. Floyd was not known for their musician prowess. I think Tool has effectively show this with their last three releases. I didn't feel Opiate and Undertow weren that complex.

That was not a PF diss, btw. I love Floyd's music.

In 13 years, Tool has made 4 albums. In the first 10 years of their existence, Floyd made 10. It's easier to have a higher percentage of good albums if you only have 4; Floyd made many more good albums. I would say that everything they did between '67 and '77 was good. But my opinion is distorted because I am a Floyd fan--just as yours. Frankly, I don't think they deserve it, but it doesn't really matter because they're not getting it anyway. The Wall is the number 3 selling album in the US of all time; you can't top that.

Hold on, wait a second. The secret song is not the best thing the've created... It's the booklet of the album.Big smile If you though the music was a masterpiece, wait 'till you figure out how to read the booklet Wink (ok, its not the best thing, but its still worth every cent)

So, could you kindly inform some of the less intelligent of us (me) how this booklet thing works exactly? I mean, the pics look cool, but what is there else?

Look through the two lenses and try to look straight ahead. After some headaches and practice the 2 photos will become 1 and it will look very cool. I suggest to start with the list of the songs, its more easier than the other pics.

Oh, thaaat's what you were talking about. Yeah I figured that out in like three minutes after I got the album. I thought you were referencing the alleged "secret puzzle" about the pictures, and after some online research, I am pretty sure it's Maynard f***ing with everyone again.

I agree...someone with more universal appeal, like Led Zep.

We'll have to wait and see. However, I think Tool is one of the most influential bands today. They are very creative and have a great sound.

The new CD, "10,000 Days" I listened to on my one hour commute home yesterday, complete with the remix of "Wings" (see some other thread about this) and it totally pumped me up. I wasn't keen on the new CD, but after 3 solid listens, I LOVE it!!!

I adore them.

I have all their albums including Salival; I observed their progression from one CD to another; I must admit their best was "Lateralus" - my favoritest prog-metal album ever(though I'm not stuck on Prog-Metal much)."10,000 Days" isn't a step back - TOOL has become more psychedelic and introvertive. They're just unpredictable, and that's why I like them. They're The Maters of The Riff - most of their songs built on just several notes, but these are the best notes I ever heard!!!

Who says "A" sounds exactly like "B"?They just have their own style and sound, like U2 or Rolling Stones, who are well-known for ages for their riffs and guitars...
You can't even clone TOOL - they'll go further anyway.

Dare I say - TOOL is KC of our days...but KC with huge MTV broadcasting("Oh boy!10-min video! We could stuck other three ones instead of this Parabola!!!" ) and young angry fans who don't care whether they prog or not.

TOOL is unique!!!

I hear that Tool fill up their albums with fillers, yet I hear none, and I have all the albums, mind you. My conclusion is that you peeps be without patience.
