ETERNAL WANDERERS - QUORUM's side-project,spacy neo-prog. TREPANGA - shock-art-rock,reminding visually of Alice Cooper All bands are in process of recording their debut albums |

MELNITSA (www.melnitsa.net) - the leading Russian Folk-Rock band, having a cello, flute, acoustic guitars and even harp in its line-up(as well as native Russian musical instruments)!!! Can be compared to JETHRO TULL(but without any bluesy influences) and RENAISSANCE(mainly because of touching female vocals),but very original and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Just bought The Soviet Rock Encyclopedia(badly written and designed),and found there...
DO MAJOR - nice symphonic Prog with Frippique guitars(their guitarist is Fripp's League's graduator) VISOKOSNOE LETO - legendary proto-AVTOGRAF band, mostly unknown ASFALT - avantgarde jazz band with RIO influences QUADRO - their keyboardist Gorsky have released recently a solo-album "The Legend about the Knight",musically close to Wakeman's solo efforts GERDA NEBESNOE ELEKTRICHESTVO KULTURNIY BUNKER MODEL MAGNIT RENTGENKABINET ^ - no recordings left .They all are said to be "art-rock" CHOLBON and SERGE - Yakutian bands with Floydian attitude(plus native art influences) NIKOLAY PARFENUK - there is said that he has released a vynil, musically close to classica; GENESIS era...I'd like to have it!!! BTW,there are NO neither HORIZONT nor RAINY SEASON...funny book... Edited by Prog-jester - August 28 2006 at 13:15 |

Gumilev is excellent poet, but he DOESN'T F***ING FIT HERE!!![
As a result,it sounds ridiculous to a Russian ear(IMO) Gonna listen to EXTROVERT more precisely right now |

Actually all you said above is true. I only disagree with the first line. IMO instrumental parts and vocal melodies are not matching at all. Singing style of Russian bards (which I love when sang by Russian bards) does not go together with powerful Symphonic Prog the band is playing. And on the other hand, poetry by Nikolay Gumilev does not require musical surrounding of this kind to remain important, thoughtful, beautiful and great.

I can't agree. I think music and lyrics go together quite well.
In my opinion LITTLE TRAGEDIES is the best prog band appeared in Russia in the last 20 years.
Singing style is close to traditions of Russian bards. Gennady Ilyin is not a great vocalist, but he has his own, instantly recognizable, voice. For me it is much better than countless technically good, but faceless singers.
And in case of LITTLE TRAGEDIES lyrics are important, while listening to their albums you have a lot to think about.
Those who are interested can listen online (stream) their 2000 album "Porcelain Pavilion" here: http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=36254. It represents the band's style well. Edited by NotAProghead - July 11 2006 at 00:13 |

Extrovert are already under discussion by the PMT.
I'll also make it my duty to inform Mike about the latter two bands for addition.

Abandon all your hopes. Faust is in the same style. I mean - music in all instrumental parts is great, but when he starts singing - it sounds like from completely different band/style/genre. I wonder if it's only me or someone else also thinks that music and lyrics/vocal lines do not go together. The band is using lyrics by great Russian poet of so called "Silver Age" era (beginning of 20th century), and lyrics as poetry are great on their own, but IMO it does not suit music at all. This is one of the rare cases when you put two "great" together and get "nothing great" as the result.

Another dissappointment - Little Tragedies "Return".Hope they're better on "New Faust",because "Return" is not my kind of music at all!!!

As far as I can remember, their vocalist really put me off. Instrumental parts are very good, though. So I kinda disagree with above suggestion. These guys could do without songs.

Just listened to AZAZELLO's "The Wings" - early FATES WARNING meets keyboardist!!! Nice stuff, but a bit OVER arranged...they should concentrate on writing SONGS rather on making insane DT-like jams...IMHO,though

I guess Shafi and Gunesh were unique in that - although you are hit by a number of tunes, that you first may label Indo Jazz Fusion but realised with time they are some distance from the likes of Shakti. I'm sure there is Mongolian throat music as well. One tune by Gunesh is inspired by Vietnamese music - and we had to wait at least 15 years before French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyen Le crossed jazz rock fusion with Vietnamese folk music

You catch me after 5 weeks of prolonged university coursework and examination marking, so forgive me if I'm still in pendant precision mode. The thread says Russia not USSR. Yes I know Horizont have been listed here for some time and it is clear not everybody else was talking lesser known bands. The liner notes for the Gunesh's album 45 degrees in a shadows , states: 'jazz rock Turkmanistan group' |
