I love SPRING self-titled debut and only album, a minor masterpiece of British prog, with three mellotrons.

Yes, you probably don't know Schicke, Fuhrs and Fröhlings "Symphonic Pictures", or you would have included it in this poll. Some of the most ominous Tron ever to terrorize the airwaves, and among the few who use it for melodies. Passport also has very cool Mellotron on Cross-Collateral and Looking Thru, only place I've ever heard it used in heavy funk.

The one that played it in Epitaph & The court of the crimson king Wink.

The Moodies also made great use of it. It's not like in your face so I like it like in the song "House of four doors". Genesis also made a very good use of the mellotron. They where the runner up. Although I like Harmonium, I don't think the mellotron is put into much ggod use, the acoustic instruments are the protagonist in that band and theres no problem with that Thumbs Up

Personnally, I think Serge Locat from Harmonium is the guy who made the best use of the mellotron.On the album "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison" the mellotron is so space and incredible.Apparently, the secret of Serge Locat magical mellotron sound is that he replaced the original M400 pre-amp with an other pre-amp that was sold in Radio Shack in the 70's.The result is a softer and spacier sound that you can hear on this wonderful album.

I love a lot of others(Moody Blues,King Crimson,Genesis,SFF) but Harmonium is so original that I vote for them.Smile

Wakey used it quite a bit but he had big problems with it on stage so came up with the Birontron which was even worse (see other threads on this site). But I'd still say his work with the Mellotron was great.

I don't think there was any Mellotron player who had no mixed feelings about the Mellotron Angry Heart ....
