Topic: Hella are now on PA Posted: May 25 2006 at 20:42 |
I don't have any albums of theirs yet, but the sample songs on their official site are excellent, so I'm getting Hold Your Horse Is soon

Hella is really part of the prog revival movement which incorporates a
more modern aesthetic to prog music. Bands like Hella, Medications,
Faraquet, and Crime in Choir would definitely fit into this category.
So I approve of Hella being in ProgArchives, at any rate.

Well, I always viewed music like this: quality is not deniable, liking it is. Same goes for the converse of that. I can always appreciate a band for their creativity or talent, but I might not always like them, and there may be some bands that aren't exactly crean of the crop or anything of the sort, but they may strike me in such a way that I would find favor in their music. I would admit their lack of skill, originality, etc. no matter how much I like them (generally speaking). In this case, I recognize qualities in Hella's music, but I don't take a liking to their sound. |
I got your point. Probably I have more simplistic approach to the matter, but I would never call a band "good" unless I like at least part of what they are doing. As for me, I don't give a damn about all qualities in the world in music of, say, OSI, when I extremely dislike the music itself. It takes time to fully apprecaite music of certain bands - such were Zeuhl bands for me - but I would not call Magma "good" about an year ago. When I say "good", I mean "good for me", which consequently means "I like it and would recommend". For example, band like Can, Faust etc are highly spoken about in prog community, but how could one say: "Can is good band, although I don't understand sh*t in what they are playing, and their music is getting on my nerves." That would mean "bad" IMO.
Ah, never mind - only words.....

hmmm.... I'm listening to "The Devil Isn't Red" for the first time... I have to say I'm having trouble getting into it. I like it OK, and I usually like math rock. but this really sounds to me like the musicians are just noodling and dont really have any sense of playing a song or making different sections flow. I dont know, maybe it'll grow on me...

Do you think it would be apropos to start a new label/genre (since you moderators/powers that be are so fond of doing so) of 'Math Rock'? I.e. bands like Don Caballero, Piglet, Hella, Dysrhythmia, Slint, etc?
Because after all post-rock/experimental just wont cut it for these types of bands, no sirree.
