Topic: Your opinion About Jesus Christ Superstar Posted: August 16 2006 at 12:03 |
I don't think it's Prog. I used to like it (I mean the original version, not the movie), but it is now about several years that I'm just struggling when listening to it. It has some moments, without a doubt, but the overall approach doesn't seem Prog to me.

all three should be included
why not open a new category as "Rock Operas"?!?!? the genre is closely related to prog. think about the other examples (e.g. War of the Worlds, and 666, which are already here)
|
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

not even related?!?!?!?
listen to "The Last Supper" (if you have the recording already ) for heaven's sake!
and after that, please listen to the album from the beginning to the end. I don't know any other album that holds so well together, with recurring themes and linked pieces (which also makes room for another prog characteristic: time signature changes...)
mmm... maybe all those who argue against this album are judging on one track, possibly "King Herod's Song"
btw, I saw the film only once and I don't have the soundtrack, but I'm more inclined towards the original cast recording with Gillan's incredible voice...

| JCS is a "proper" fully composed Rock opera, with structured recitative and aria. Quadrophenia is a simple soundtrack by comparison. One might just as well include the soundtrack to "Head" by the Monkees... Tommy is closer than Quadrophenia, and I guess it could be filed under Various artists too, since it features artists other than the Who - however, it's still more rock than opera, since it's comprised of Rock songs. |
I presume you are refering to the movie soundtrack "Tommy" and not the Who album? | Both. |
So, who plays on the who album besides the who? |
Ah.
I get your meaning now - I thought you were asking which version of the album was comprised of Rock songs...

I'd support the addition of the original recording (with Ian Gillan) in the Various artists section. Not the addition of any of the stage show recordings though.

I should clarify that while I think it would be a worthy addition, only
in the "prog-related" section. But what do i know? I think I'm
little too new to this site to be spouting of my opinion on what should
be deemed proggy enough for this site (but I won't let that stop
me).

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.
