Topic: Wonderful cover - Bad album Posted: April 25 2006 at 23:23 |
Yes, I meant the UK sleeve, not the US sleeve.
I quite like Hendrix' decision on that actually, to dislike the UK cover.

Wasn't the U.S. cover the original? I know Hendrix didn't care for the U.K. sleeve.....

More's cover doesn't do justice to the wonderful music inside.
Again with Going For the One love the songs confused by the cover, what were they thinking?
U.S. version of Time and A Word cover is preety boring, but I love the music.
For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night, like the album but the cover is a little perverted, not what I look forward to in prog.
Moonmadness is a boring cover as well but the album rocks!

Yeah, God knows why they did that. |
From what I've heard, it's because they were pissed at Capitol for "butchering" their albums; often Capitol would add or remove trackis from the original album for the US version. BUt it was recalled very quickly (as you might imagine), so I'm not sure it really counts.
I despise the cover of Three Friends; I can't comment on the music, but I assume that it's pretty good as Gentle Giant seems to be well-liked on here; however, I will never buy that album because I could not stand having to look at that cover on a regular basis.

I like the Godbluff cover! I don't know if I like the Van der Graaf logo so much though (I mean Van der Graaf, not Van der Graaf Generator - the logo for the classic lineup is a classic logo). Some might say: The Silent Corner and The Empty Stage by Peter Hammill. Get A Whiff Of This by Juicy Lucy: The Original Electric Ladyland cover, which I am not showing here!

Meatloaf-Bat Out Of Hell. Bought it for the cover-nothing else.

Asia, most of their albums have really good Roger Dean covers. I dont think we have to soil this page by talking about the music though.

A good album with a bad cover is Jefferson Airplane, Crown of Creation.

Inferno by Metamorfosi is an excellent album with a rather ugly looking cover which does not give any indication of the magnificent content of the album.
But I have grown used to it.

I'm in total agreement. The music is out of this world, shame about the cover. The same applies to an album featuring two-thirds of the Red lineup, i.e. UK's debut album. Insignificant cover, fantastic music.
As to great covers vs. not-so-great music, the first example that comes to my mind is Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans. I won't say it's a bad album (it's not) - it just does nothing for me, I'm afraid.

Not a bad album at all! Considered by many as HEEP's best.

King Crimson started off with some great album covers then we got some lame ones:
"Earthbound" - awful cover and not a great recording.
"Starless and Bible Black" - bland cover but great music
"Red" - another unimaginative cover - but imo the best KC album.
Perhaps in general the covers do reflect the music. I disagree with those members who don't like the covers for Rush - Hemispheres, Yes - Going For The One, Jethro Tull - Broadsword and The Beast - they are brilliant works of art and both the Yes album and JT's album have great music. Unfortunately, I never did get into Rush.

- I'm not a big fan of any of Genesis's covers (except Trespass), but fantastic music was contained within many of them - The obvious GFTO. I don't mind the naked guy so much, but the rest of it is weak too - Deep Purple's Fireball has a pretty cool cover, but I think the album is fairly weak - The already mentioned Moving Waves - The already mentioned Godbluff - The Yes Album's boring cover - The overly bright and annoying LTIA cover - The cool Obscued by Clouds cover - Not prog, but Iron Maiden's Virtual XI has a fantastic cover and the album is horrifying

Starless and Bible Black, lousy cover great album; maybe they should swap.
The great thing about Genesis was when their music went downhill so did the covers, while their early covers and music are both great.
But with Going for the One I always liked the cover, but sure who wants to see a guys rear end? for me its the whole musical city thing in the backround which is awesome, maybe if Mr G. For the One wore some jeans it would be a better cover, the same goes for Hemispheres . |
Its better then the other side |

I can't really think of anything outside of those mentioned... usually great album = great cover.

Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
I love the album but very bad cover in my opinion
