Well I love the album by album classification idea as everyone else here seems to as well. It would be great while reading a discography of an unfamiliar band to see how the band progressed their music and where they took their creativity. While it might be a hard task it would probably be well worth it in the end.

One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

Exactly. I've been using the Archives mainly in search of fresh Prog and this would really help my quest. I also think your idea of simply putting a genre selection list on the reviews page (instead of moderating the options for each album) would mean very little extra workload for reviewers.
Plus, you could introduce such a system "unmoderated" and simply give collaborators the opportunity to "moderate" on the genre-options for specific albums if there is a need for it (for instance: abusive fanboys).
But most of all, I very much appreciate the hard work all of you put into this site. it has been (and still is) a great source of new prog discoveries for me. Thanks.

No, it's an album:
"I Can't Dance" is the song.

Here my thoughts so far..
- Sorry, we will not delete NON-PROG albums
Already retired this proposition (I added it but two posts ago understood is not practoical to mutilate a band's history), so no problem
- I like the non-prog albums ideas, it's simplier but not really helpful for the visitors. How about , when an album is non-prog: leave a open field to give more details about the genre of thre records. Ex: Non-prog: Classic Rock 70's, Pop
Now it sounds like music to my ears Let the rest of the forum participate in more conflictive cases and even the team leaders (after talking with their teams) may start some polls.
- This brings a new subjects, does an album can have more than 1 genre ?
If it's in Art Rock for exammple, and not only in Art Rock. take some band cases:
- Renaissance (Symphonic and Folk blend easily) Sheherazde and other Stories
- OSIBISA (Psyche, Proto Prog and Folk/Ethnic are all perfect for Woyaya and the self titled, if you add heads. it has also Funk and Reggae.
- Miranda Sex Garden; The album called Fairytales of Slavery and Carnival of Souls bklend Folk, Goth and post Rock.
But there should always be a main genre.
Ex: Prog Metal, RIO
So are SLEEPY TIME GORILLA MONSTER records ?
Not my field or my cup of tea, so leave this to the experts. ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) NP: NHL playoffs 2006 ;-)

Yes, secondary genre could work! It would read "Symphonic Prog with Avant-Prog influences", for example. |

I tihnk we could use a hard/dark prog section. I defiantly have always felt that King Crimson was neither Symphonic prog or Art rock. and they are very heavy at times, almost bordering progmetal, so I vote YES

Depends what you want the site for. But anyone wanting to find an entire discography of a band will look elsewhere ratjer than here.
Anyway, you and I would argue over which albums were prog or not.

Of course an album would only have one genre, although we could additionally display genre "votings" by reviews.
And of course it would be much work, but:
- I think it would really be worth it, and I'd gladly do the job (at least for my "base genre")
- We would only have to edit the albums which differ from the artist genre.

I've allways thougt adding genres to albums would be a great improvement. Cheers to PA for finally taking the step.
Thinking of it. Why don't you collaborators create a poll-option for each album in which you define the possible genres and let members vote between the options (I believe Mike mentioned a thing like this).
Example:
Queen 2:
x Art-Rock (40%)
x Symphonic Prog (35%)
x Non Prog (25%)
445 votes
[cast your vote]
or
Hot Space
x Non Prog (85%)
x Art Rock (15%)
These numbers would be quite informative to newcomers, apart from the rating. |
Sorry man, but see this as almost impossible,, we have 11,143 titles from exactly 2,323 bands (TODAY) if ythis numbers don't change we will probably finish this polls by 2068 and use the badwith of 25 sites like this one.
The team must do it and accept suggestuions from the members in specific and conflictoive cases.
