Of course Sunn0))) are progressive - their sound experimentation is unbeleivable.
Don't forget they are influenced by EARTH, more than the Melvins. They essentially started the project as a tribute to Earth.

I really think of Sunn O))) as more of a performance art piece than an acutal rock band. I think they're "experimental", but I wouldn't call them a prog metal band.

I'm yet unexperienced with Sunn O))), but I'm interested of the genre subjects related to it: I think that psychedelic rock has an interface with metal genre via "Stoner rock" style. An example of "Stoner rock" within psychedelic frame of reference could be PHARAOH OVERLORD, f.ex.
It would be interesteing to discuss how the stoner rock and related stuff fits to Prog Archives! I think that if a stoner rock band's music is artistic, not meant to get just good chart position but to create artistic music, they migth fit here well, even if they would have strong sound enough to be heavy metal!

The question is: What separates Post Rock from Drone? It's not necessarily more complex. If an artist chooses a minimalistic approach, with very reduced instrumentation - it can also be art, just like there are some painters who draw a single black dot on a canvas and call it art. |

Spacemen 3 barely write two riffs per song, they're somewhat experimental and interesting but in no way shape or form prog... |

Spacemen 3 would top my list for 'Drone' bands that should be included (should they be included).
Wow, that was a grammatical trainwreck :) |

I agree - in my book they're progressive, but in order to maintain consistency I also think that there needs to be a clear division between "simple" drone bands and "complex" post rock bands. |

If Sunn 0))) get added, that opens the door for legions of other drone/funeral doom metal bands who've essentially copied their sound and aesthetic. I've never heard Sunn classified as a prog band anywhere, and would strongly oppose their addition to this site.

I never ever heard somebody call the Melvins a Drone band, that's all. I think they're more appropriately called an Experimental Alternative band with Punk/Hardcore influences.

another drone band called "Boris" is named after the Melvins song.
melvins pioneered that sound and should be added for that before other
drone bands. They also experimented in many other genres and are very
progressive IMO

Melvins ... not really "Drone", are they? May be as (or even more) noisy as Sunn O))) though.

Just out of curiosity I started this poll ... Here are some short samples: http://www.emusic.com/album/10752/10752272.html This poll indirectly shows whether a band generally categorized as "Drone" can be prog. Personally I really like Sunn O))), but I think that the Drone style, although it is related to Post Rock/Metal, is not sophisticated enough to be called "Progressive". But I do think that some Drone bands may be accepted as prog, and Sunn O))) may be one of them. I need to listen to them some more, I downloaded one of their albums only yesterday and listened to it one time. |
