Keyboards are what really pull prog together for me. Bands like Rush who do not utilize keyboards like other prog bands do tend to suffer in the absence of overall sound textures and layering. The lack of keyboards tend to make a band sound "thin" like a straight ahead hard rock band. Of course there are exceptions, but keyboards are what do it for me. I like a creative drumming style as well. I prefer bands that utilize their rhythm section in a almost jazz like fashion.

Personally i find the Flute is the winner! I love it when Mr.Lake plays it on I talk to the wind and on any song on In the Court really, its simply Amazing! For second place i chose both the Moog and the Organ

For me, Hammond & Mellotron (unsurprisingly)
But where is the poll option for that most prog of alll instruments, the double necked guitar - here modelled by an obscure ex-public schoolboy: Mind you - you can take things too far... John - you're just being silly! |

Where the hell is the MANDOLIN!!!! It's the greatest instrument of all time regardless of genre. Tull uses the mandolin to great effect, in case you're wondering where it appears in prog. Also missing is the incredible ACCORDIAN!! Check out Uzva (and of course Tull) for some righteous accordian. Two instruments that have been woefully overlooked.

The Moog. The king of synths. I love it over my own instrument (bassguitar), and I don't even play it!

So would I... Heck, I just realised I posted (and voted) twice, saying the same thing all over again. I suppose I'll have to delete one of the two! To Vince aka Tlossy: I wish I had your faith in proclaiming Myung as a great bassist, because I sure as hell can't hear him on most of the DT records I own! |

Out of this list I vote for the Mellotron, but had the Rickenbacker Bass been in this list, I would have voted for it.
